Carrollton, GA - The University of West Georgia Baseball team hosted Georgia Southwestern State this evening, but came out on the losing side by a final score of 5-3.
Chris Burdette got the start for the Wolves tonight, pitching a strong 5.2 innings, but coming away with the loss. Burdette did not surrender an earned run in his outing, but the 'Canes had a big top of the sixth inning scoring four runs off of three errors.
The game was looking up for the Wolves until the sixth inning, as they had a 3-0 lead. UWG got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when
Shaquille Jackson came into score from third base on a RBI single to right field from
JoJo Underwood.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the West Georgia offense tallied two more runs to their 1-0 lead.
Artemis Kadkhodaian picked up a RBI in the inning, scoring
Jake Shirley from third.
Shirley also played stout defense from left field, throwing two runners out at home plate on fantastic throws, as well as making a diving catch.
However, things took a turn for the worst in the top of the sixth inning, as GSW took a 4-3 lead. Fielding errors at third base, shortstop, and second base allowed the 'Canes to be in a position to score runs, and they took advantage of the opportunity. Adding four hits to the three errors committed by the Wolves, GSW scored four runs.
The Canes' would add one more run in the top of the seventh inning and go on to win the game by a final score of 5-3.
West Georgia moves to 12-18 on the year, and they now prepare for a tough conference weekend against Delta State. The series will be played at Cole Field, with a doubleheader on Saturday to begin at 2:00 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
