CARROLLTON, Ga. – After winning their sixth straight game on Saturday, the UWG men's basketball team will look to make it seven straight, on Wednesday, when they hit the road for a conference matchup against the Union Bulldogs that's set for 8:30 p.m.
West Georgia (10-9, 7-5 GSC) comes into the game winners of their last six with their last victory coming against Mississippi College on Saturday. Union (17-4, 11-2 GSC) enters on a three-game winning streak, including a 112-86 win over Valdosta State on January 22
nd which is tied for the third most points scored by anyone in the conference this season.
West Georgia is averaging 73.4 points per game on the year, good for eighth in the Gulf South Conference. The Wolves are giving up 72.4 points per game which is good for seventh in the league. Union is averaging 79.7 points per game which ranks third in the conference while allowing 70.1 points per game which ranks fifth.
Wednesday's matchup between the Wolves and the Bulldogs will mark the 19
th meeting between the two GSC teams. The all-time series is extremely tight as Union leads the series 10-8 with a margin of victory of 1.6 points. The last matchup between the two teams came earlier this season where Union took an 86-70 victory over West Georgia in Carrollton. In the game, the Bulldogs outshot the Wolves 50% to 40% and outrebounded UWG by seven.
Michael Zabetakis finished with a team-high 22 points and 11 rebounds while
Kadeim Jones added 17 points and five rebounds.
Saturday's win over Mississippi College marked the 50
th career win for coach
Dave Moore. Moore, who's in his fourth year as UWG head coach, now has a career record of 50-48. In his first four years at UWG, Moore has produced three All-Conference players, a GSC Player of the Year, and a GSC Commissioner's trophy recipient. In the 2020-2021 season, Moore guided the Wolves to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2017, and their first NCAA regional win since 2014.
During Saturday's win over Mississippi College, guard
Michael Zabetakis hit the 1,000-career point milestone less than three minutes into the game. Zabetakis becomes the 12
th player in school history to score 1,000 career points and the first to do it since Marquill Smith who achieved it back in 2019. Guard
Kadeim Jones continued his hunt for 1,000 career points after he scored 10 points on Saturday, putting him just 15 points away from becoming the 13
th member of the exclusive club.
Union is led by senior guard Tyree Boykin. Boykin's 19.4 points per game leads the Bulldogs and puts him second in the conference just .9 behind the league's leading scorer, Kortrijk Miles. Boykin has 10 20+ point scoring games this season with a season-high 30 points coming against Valdosta State on January 22
nd . In his last three games, Boykins is averaging 28 points per game on 60% shooting and 63% from three, guiding the Bulldogs to three straight wins. In the first meeting against West Georgia, Boykins scored 21 points and recorded two steals.
Alongside Boykins, Union has three more double-digit a game scorers in Hunter Vick, Tylandrius Parks, and Nguidbol Boe. Boe is a 6'8" forward who is averaging 13.6 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game on 50% shooting. Boe has caught fire for Union as the junior is averaging 21 points and 7.3 rebounds on 56% shooting in the last three games. Parks is a 6'5" guard who is averaging 11.5 points per game and 6.4 rebounds on 50% shooting while accumulating three double-doubles on the season which is tied for first amongst the team. Vick is a 6'4" guard who is averaging 10.4 points per game while leading Union in assists and steals with 3.2 and 1.4 respectively.
