West Georgia Heads to Alabama to Face Troy

11/28/2025 4:02:00 PM

CARROLLTON, Ga- December kicks off with the UWG men's basketball team hitting the road to take on Troy University at 7 p.m. on the first of the month. A link to the ESPN+ broadcast is tagged at the top of the page.

After the Wolves' (4-3) three-game winning streak was snapped at Georgia Tech (Nov. 23), UWG continues its road swing taking on the Trojans (5-4), who recently broke its two-game losing skid with a win over Saint Francis (Nov. 26).

UWG and Troy have faced off 21 times in the series history. Currently, the Trojans lead the series 13-8. Troy took the first head-to-head, 71-67, during the 1960-61 season and they won the latest matchup, 84-65, last season (Nov. 19, 2024).

One month into play, Shelton Williams-Dryden leads the Wolves and ranks third in the ASUN in scoring with an average of 19 points per game, while shooting 45 percent from the field (eighth in the ASUN) and 75 percent from the line. In addition to ranking in the top-ten in these categories, the forward's 10 rebounds per game average places him second in the ASUN and his 1.6 steals per game places him sixth. Totaling 70 rebounds, Williams-Dryden is currently tied for 20th nationally with multiple other players. This past Monday (Nov. 24), Williams-Dryden earned ASUN Player of the Week, marking the second time in his career he took home these honors.

Another Wolf joining Williams-Dryden on the ASUN leaderboard is guard Josh Smith. Through seven games, Smith has averaged 15.7 points per game (eighth in the ASUN), while shooting 45 percent from the field (ninth in the ASUN) and 44 percent from three. In addition to these solid figures, Smith ranks third on the team with 17 assists and has totaled 16 rebounds. Possessing the ability to take over the game at a moment's notice, Smith has recorded two 20-plus-point performances this season and has scored double-digits five times. One month into play, Smith and Williams-Dryden have been the consistent one-two punch for the Wolves' offense.

Looking at the Trojans, Troy is led in scoring by guard Cooper Campbell, who is averaging 16 points per game (fourth in the Sun Belt) while shooting 49 percent from the field and 45 percent from three. In Troy's triple overtime loss to USC (Nov. 20), Campbell recorded a career-high 32 points, twice as many points as his previous best of 16. Nine games in and the guard has tallied double-digit scoring performances in all but the latest game. He also averages a Trojans-best 4.8 assists per game.

Right behind Campbell, averaging 15.9 points per game (sixth in the Sun Belt) while shooting 46 percent from the field and 38 percent from three is forward Thomas Dowd. Like Williams-Dryden, Dowd's impact is not limited to just scoring. Currently, his team-high 100 rebounds is the most by any player in Division I. Averaging out to 11.1 rebounds per game, the forward has recorded five double-doubles this season, with Dowd currently riding a four-game double-double streak. Dowd's two-steals per game average is also a Trojan-best.

Joining Campbell and Dowd on the Sun Belt's top-ten scoring list is forward Victor Valdes, who is averaging 15.4 points per game (eighth in the Sun Belt) while shooting 43 percent from the field and 27 percent from three. Nine games in and the six-foot-seven forward has dropped 20 or more points three times, highlighted by a career-high 24-point performance in Troy's double overtime win over San Diego State (Nov. 18)

As a team, UWG averages 76.3 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the field, 39 percent from three and 68 percent from the line. On defense, the Wolves have conceded an average of 78.4 points per game. On the other side, Troy has averaged 88 points while shooting 45 percent from the field and 33 percent from three. Its opponents score an average of 81.7 points on the Trojans.
