Nate Masters will begin his fifth year at UWG in 2024, serving as the Recruiting Coordinator and Safeties Coach on Joel Taylor's staff.
The 2021 season marked the first under Masters and the UWG defense ranked 28th in the country in total defense and 22nd in the country in scoring defense. Two players, Deontae Overstreet and Marzavion Dix, were named All-Gulf South Conference under Masters in 2021. Overstreet was a First Team selection while Dix garnered Second Team honors. Additionally, Overstreet was a First Team All-Super Region Two performer, leading the Wolves in tackles with 59 total stops and 40 solo tackles. The hard-hitting safety also led the Wolves defense with three forced fumbles.
In 2022, the Wolves went 8-2 with the defense again leading the charge. West Georgia allowed just 14 points in the first three games of the season, including a shutout of Morehouse for the second consecutive season. The defense produced multiple postseason award winners, beginning with Robert Carter, who was named an All-American by the Associated Press. Carter was also a First Team All-Region performer, joining Dix and Overstreet, who were each also named All-Region. That trio was also named First Team All-Gulf South Conference, joining Second Team performers Allen Johnson and Xavier Robinson.Â

Masters came to West Georgia following an eight-year stint on the staff at Berry College, including the last six seasons as the Vikings' defensive coordinator. His defensive units were instrumental in Berry winning four consecutive conference titles in the Southern Athletic Association. That streak was capped in 2019 as Berry rose as high as the number seven spot in the NCAA Division III national rankings. Also, their defense ranked in the nation top ten in quarterback sacks and fewest touchdowns allowed.
Masters is a native Georgian who had a stellar prep career at Mount de Sales in Macon. He was a three-year starter, team captain, and all-conference performer as a defensive back at LaGrange College, taking part in LaGrange's inaugural season of football in 2006. Masters began his coaching career at LaGrange before moving to the staff at Berry in 2012.
Masters earned a bachelor's degree in history in 2009 and a master's degree in teaching in 2012, both from LaGrange College. Masters and his wife, Stephanie, reside in Carrollton with their two sons Myles and Eli.Â
