Name, Image, and Likeness Information

Beginning July 1, 2021, an interim policy instituted by the NCAA allows student-athletes to earn compensation for their name, image, or likeness. Helpful information for student-athletes, their families, supporters of UWG Athletics and employees of the University of West Georgia can be found by accessing the complete Policy and Associated Procedures.  (See UWG PL 8001, Intercollegiate Athletic Governance and associated procedure: Student Athlete Name/Image/Likeness [NIL] Compensation)

NAME, IMAGE & LIKENESS GUIDANCE FAQs:

Q: Can a booster-owned company, or companies they are employed by, provide compensation for a student-athlete's name, image, and likeness?
A:
Yes, as long as not directed or arranged by the University, athletic department, coaches or staff.

Q: When will agreements be required to be disclosed to the athletic department?
A:
As soon as practicable but no later than seven business days after signing.

Q: Will a student-athlete's Pell Grant or need-based financial aid be impacted by NIL?
A:
Yes, aid could be impacted based on compensation from name, image, and likeness.

Q: Will having an athlete agent who represents the student-athlete beyond Name, Image, and Likeness be a NCAA compliance and eligibility issue?
A:
Yes. Questions should be directed to the Athletic Compliance Office (678-839-6533 or athletics-compliance@westga.edu

Q: Can a student-athlete go to a car dealer and sign autographs and be compensated?
A:
Yes, if the following requirements are met::
  • Complete the Name/Image/Likeness (NIL) Disclosure packet and submit to athletics-compliance@westga.edu.
  • No athletic department coach, staff member, or booster arranged it
  • There is no use of UWG marks or logos without appropriate written permission from the appropriate University official or agent (see section 4, NIL Disclosure Packet)

Q: Can a student-athlete start their own YouTube Channel or other social media account and benefit financially?
A:
Yes, if the following requirements are met:
  • Complete the Name/Image/Likeness (NIL) Disclosure packet and submit to athletics-compliance@westga.edu
  • No athletic department coach, staff member, or booster arranged it
  • There is no use of UWG marks or logos without appropriate written permission (see section 4, NIL DIsclosure Packet)

Q: Can a student-athlete use videos and photos of themselves competing or practicing?
A:
Yes, if not for NIL/commercial content. If that content is for NIL/commercial purposes, they will need to secure the rights to marks, video, or photos from the holder of those rights by completing/submitting the NIL Disclosure Packet to athletics-compliance@westga.edu

Q: Will student-athletes be able to host their own camp/clinic and/or give lessons for a fee?
A: Yes, provided that all University policies and procedures for hosting camps are followed when the event is hosted on-campus. Institutional facilities cannot be used for lessons unless the facilities are rented per University policies.
