Scott Groninger

Veteran mentor Scott Groninger returns to the UWG sidelines for the new season. The 2021-22 season will be Groninger's 12th campaign as the Wolves’ head coach, and he's looking for bigger and better success in 2021-22.

Groninger's team struggled amidst a COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 season, winning just five games, breaking a string of four straight winning seasons. A year prior, the Wolves put together a solid campaign in 2019-20, finishing 18-11 overall. That was good enough for the sixth seed in the Gulf South Conference tournament, sending the Wolves to the postseason for the 10th consecutive season.

The 2018-19 season was the type of year that has been the norm for Groninger’s teams, as the Wolves finished 16-12 with their fourth trip to the GSC Semifinals in the past six seasons. The Wolves were 10-10 in GSC play and beat second-seeded West Florida on the road in the first round of the GSC Tournament to reach the semifinals. Jessica Brown was named to the All-Tournament Team and was also named Academic All-Gulf South Conference.

Groninger has put together an 143-157 record in 11 seasons as the Wolves’ head coach, with his best season coming in 2014-15, a 19-11 overall finish and a 13-9 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

In his previous ten seasons, Groninger has coached six All-Gulf South Conference selections, and landed two on the All-South Region Teams and two Honorable Mention All-America Selections. De’Ashia Jones was the most recent selection, being named Second Team All-GSC in 2017. Katrina Littlepage was named both All-Region and All-America in 2015-16 while Taylor Beverly earned that honor in her one season in Carrollton in 2014-15.

In 17 seasons as a head coach, Groninger has won 234 games and lost 236. His 138 wins at West Georgia is second all-time in wins by a UWG head coach.

Groninger came to West Georgia following a successful stint at GSC rival Christian Brothers. Prior to his service at Christian Brothers, he captured league coach of the year honors in leading Chowan (N.C.) to a conference title in 2004. Also, he previously served as an assistant at a pair of Division I programs: Kentucky and Chicago State.

Groninger is a graduate of William Jewell (Mo.) College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He also holds a Master of Health Science from Georgia Southern University. He and his wife Kelly are parents of three daughters: Megan, Kristen and Mary-Kate.
