The game marks the fourth time in its three-year history that University Stadium will be the host of the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week on CSS. The television debut for the Home of the Wolves was on October 8, 2009, as West Georgia fell victim to Arkansas-Monticello. Just a few weeks later, the Wolves put up a good showing against Valdosta State, but fell in that matchup as well.
Last season, University Stadium hosted just one TV battle, with West Georgia pulling out a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Harding.
In the season opener two weeks ago, the Wolves traveled to Tusculum to take on the Pioneers and one of the most prolific offenses in Division II football. Featuring four All-Americans, including 2010 Harlon Hill candidate Bo Cordell, TC was no slouch in the first game of the year.
The West Georgia offense moved the ball in the game, especially on the ground. The Wolves had 200 yards rushing in the contest, but sputtered in the red zone with five turnovers in the contest. Tusculum capitalized and won the game by a 20-10 score.
But the story of the opener was the UWG defense, which held Cordell and Co. to less total yards than the Tusculum offense averaged passing alone in 2010. The Pioneers averaged 424 passing last season and had 417 total yards against the stingy UWG defense, including no touchdown passes.
Cornerback Tim Green and safety Jenoris Darby were the leaders on defense with nine and eight tackles, respectively. On the offensive side, three different UWG runners contributed to the cause. Senior James Kennebrew led the way with 77 yards, followed by 71 from Yusuf Holloway and 56 from junior quarterback Emmanuel Taylor.
The Wolves opponent for the 2011 home opener is the Miles Bears, a team that comes into the third week of the season with a 1-1 record. The Bears were blasted by Morehouse on opening weekend, then barely snuck by Concordia-Selma last week with a 13-6 victory. Miles is led on the year by junior running back Jordan Lewis, who is averaging over 100 yards per game after a 142-yard outburst last week.
In the season opener two weeks ago, the Bears ran into a tough opponent in the Morehouse Maroon Tigers, as the Tigers blasted Miles 47-9. The Morehouse defense was stingy, allowing just 123 total yards in the win.
The University Stadium gates are set to open Thursday night at 5:30 p.m., with the Wolves set to take the field against Miles at 7:00 p.m.
