UWG Ground Attack downs Lions

Box Score
Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves used a potent ground attack to grind out a 21-point second half Thursday night at University Stadium, snapping a four-game losing streak with a 38-23 victory over the North Alabama Lions in GSC action.

The Wolves rushed 65 times in Thursday night's victory, picking up 314 yards on the ground in West Georgia's first win over North Alabama since 2005. It was also the first time that UWG had back-to-back games with two 100-yard rushers, as senior #David Bailey# and sophomore #Seth Hinsley# both eclipsed that mark. Bailey and freshman #Dallas Dickey accomplished that feat last week against Delta State.

North Alabama opened the scoring in the contest, taking the opening kickoff and methodically marched down the field. The Lions took 12 plays to go 74 yards in 5:25, with quarterback Luke Wingo finishing off the drive with a 1-yard dive to take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

The Wolves responded by rushing the ball eight straight times for positive yardage on the ensuing drive. Dickey capped the 75-yard march with a 21-yard scamper to the endzone, leaping across the pylon to tie the score at 7-7.

After an exchange of punts, the Lions retook the lead with a 61-yard drive that finished on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Wingo to Lee Mayhall at the beginning of the second quarter. But in a growing trend in the contest, the Wolves responded quickly.

West Georgia marched 75 yards again in 10 plays, with Hinsley taking the ball for the score this time, delivering a punishing eight-yard run for the score. The big play in the drive was a 23-yard completion from Dickey to #Randall Snell# on 3rd-and-7 from the UWG 28, giving the Wolves new life.

The two teams then traded field goals over the next two drives. UNA had the last laugh in the period, with kicker Taylor Pontius hitting a 24-yard field goal to close the first half with North Alabama leading 20-17.

Coming out of the break, the UWG offensive line began to take control of the game, as the Wolves marched 75 yards in nine plays, scoring on a 1-yard plunge from Dickey in what would eventually be the game-winning touchdown. #Davis Brackett# hit the extra point to put the Wolves up 24-20. Dickey and Hinsley had the big hits on the drive, with Dickey picking up a 34-yard run and Hinsley a 23-yard romp.

After the UWG defense held North Alabama to a three-and-out on the opening drive of the half, Dickey and the UWG offense seemed to put the game away with a back-breaking drive. The Wolves took seven minutes and 25 seconds to go 80 yards in 15 plays, with Dickey again closing the drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak.

The Lions swept back down the field, but were forced to settle for another field goal from Pontius, pulling to within eight at 31-23. The Wolves held the ball for another five minutes, but had to punt, pinning UNA inside their own 20.

Two plays later, the true back-breaker came, as a Wingo pass was high over the middle, right into the waiting hands of junior safety #Donovan Jackson#. The Florida native raced down the sideline 48 yards for the final score of the night. Jackson had one more interception in the game, picking off a pass on the Lions' final drive of the night.

Bailey led the Wolves with 118 yards on 27 carries in the contest, followed closely by Hinsley with 110 yards on 22 carries. Dickey added 11 carries for 73 yards and had three scores to his credit. Hinsley added one for the cause. Junior #Bobby Liggins# led the Wolves in tackles with 10 and Jackson added the two picks.

West Georgia moves to 3-4 on the season and 1-3 in GSC play, while UNA falls to 5-3 and 2-2 in conference action. The Wolves play next at West Texas A&M next Saturday at University Stadium with an 8 p.m. kickoff on ESPN3.
