Football Gameweek: The West Texas A&M Game

Carrollton, GA - Saturday night, the Wolves will continue their three-game homestand under the lights, as GSC-TV Live Game of the Week returns to University Stadium. West Georgia will also be playing in their first contest in the GSC-LSC 1st-and-10 Challenge, a series of contests between teams in two powerhouse conferences.

The opponent for the 1st-and-10 challenge will be 14th-ranked West Texas A&M out of the Lonestar State Conference. The Buffalos come into the week with a 7-1 record on the season and are undefeated in LSC play. West Georgia brings a 3-4 record on the year with a 1-3 spot in Gulf South Conference action. The game will be broadcast live on CSS and can also be found on ESPN3.

UWG at a Glance
The Wolves are coming off of an emotional win and a feather in the cap of the 2012 senior class, as UWG took down GSC power North Alabama last Thursday night at University Stadium. Prior to last Thursday, West Georgia had not beaten UNA since 2004 and were the lone remaining team that the 2012 senior class had yet to defeat. West Georgia rushed 65 times for 314 yards in the contest against the Lions, pushing four touchdowns through on the ground with the fourth coming via a Donovan Jackson interception return for a touchdown. Senior David Bailey and Sophomore Seth Hinsley each rushed for 100 yards in the game, the second-straight game that UWG put up two 100-yard rushers. Jackson now leads the team with three interceptions after two picks against North Alabama. His performance earned the junior the GSC Defensive Player of the Week award. The touchdown was his second trip to paydirt this season, as he had a 35-yard score earlier this season against West Alabama on a fumble return.

West Texas A&M at a glance
The Buffalos have but one loss on the season, falling to Colorado State-Pueblo in the season opener, the current #1 team in the nation. Junior defensive lineman Ethan Westbrooks tallied his second consecutive LSC Defensive Player of the Week honor as he had three more sacks to go along with six total tackles in a 44-21 win at Eastern New Mexico last week.  He leads the conference and is tied for fourth nationally in sacks with 10 total and a 1.25 per game average. Senior running back Khiry Robinson had his fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing performance on 16 carries for 131 yards and a career-high four rushing touchdowns at Eastern New Mexico last Saturday.  His four touchdowns on the ground were the most in a game since Keithon Fleming scored four against Central Washington Nov. 15, 2008.  For his efforts, he earned his second Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season.

THE GSC-LSC FIRST AND TEN CHALLENGE - The GSC-LSC First and Ten Challenge was created this season between the Gulf South Conference and the Lone Star Conference that will match up football teams from two of the best leagues in all of NCAA Division II. The event includes 10 inter-conference games involving all five GSC football-playing members and six of the LSC's nine teams. Through the midway point of the GSC-LSC First and Ten Challenge, the GSC has a 3-2 lead, with the visiting teams winning each game thus far.  The average score of the games in the series this year has been 31-27.

The Coaches
West Georgia is coached by Daryl Dickey, who is in his fifth season at West Georgia. He is 13-34 at UWG and has an overall record of 41-49. West Texas A&M is led by Don Carthel, who is in his eighth season at WTAMU. He has an overall record of 74-20.

Hall-of-Fame Game
West Georgia will honor four former UWG standouts at halftime of Saturday's game with the annual UWG Hall-of-Fame inductions. Joining the UWG Hall-of-Fame will be softball standouts Jessie Wise and Mary Carlise, men's basketball star Andy Young and former offensive lineman Jonathan Brinson. The brand new Hall-of-Fame in the Athletic Operations Building will be introduced prior to the game and the four newest members of the prestigious club will be officially inducted at halftime of the game.

West Georgia on TV
Saturday's contest against West Texas A&M will be the third time this season that University Stadium will be the site of the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week. The Wolves beat Tusculum 38-29 in the second game of the year and UNA 38-23 last week. It is also the eighth time in the four-year history of University Stadium that regional television cameras have captured the action. West Georgia is 4-3 in televised games since opening University Stadium.
