Carrollton, GA - The first foray for the West Georgia Wolves into the 1st and 10 Challenge between the Gulf South Conference and Lone Star Conference went to the LSC, as 14th-ranked West Texas A&M used a high-powered offensive attack to upend the Wolves at University Stadium Saturday, handing UWG a 52-28 loss.
West Georgia was coming off of an impressive night rushing the ball against North Alabama one week prior, as the Wolves rushed 65 times for 314 yards while getting a pair of 100-yard nights from a pair of backs for the second-straight week.
The Wolves' rushing attack was on display in a solid way early in the contest, after the UWG defense forced a punt on the first drive of the game from the Buffaloes. Led by freshman quarterback #
Dallas Dickey#, the Wolves methodically moved down the field, going 64 yards in nine plays. West Georgia took it's first lead of the game on a two-yard pass from Dickey to #
David Bailey# with 8:38 left in the first quarter.
West Texas A&M responded with a 62-yard bomb from quarterback Dustin Vaughan to Word Hudson on the fourth play of the ensuing drive. The march covered 75 yards, as the Buffaloes tied the contest at 7-7 in just 1:12.
Dickey and the UWG offense were all in for the fight, as the Wolves commenced another drive. This one took 11 plays, covered 67 yards and ate up 5:07 on the clock. Bailey finished off the drive again, this time pounding it in from three-yards out for the score.
The second quarter was all West Texas A&M, as the Buffaloes scored 24 unanswered points to take a 31-14 lead into the locker room at the break.
Despite the deficit, the Wolves didn't stay down, outscoring West Texas A&M 14-7 in the third quarter, starting with a 15-play drive that covered more than eight minutes to open the half. The drive was a mix of run and pass, but no play went for negative yards on the march. Dickey capped the drive with a three-yard run pulilng the Wolves to within 10 at 31-21.
The next five plays after that touchdown were likely the plays that changed the game completely, beginning with the first play, which was a Vaughan pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by UWG linebacker #
Tyrell Adams#. The following three plays were negative rushing plays for West Georgia, including a pair of sacks, the second also coming as a forced fumble, which was recovered by the Buffaloes at the UWG 46.
The fifth and final play in the strange series of events was a 46-yard touchdown pass from Vaughan to Torrence Allen, putting West Texas A&M up 38-21. The Wolves put one more score on the board, a 33-yard pass from Dickey to #
Joey Eliezer#, but it was not enough, as the Buffaloes racked up 14 fourth-quarter points to seal the Wolves' fate.
West Georgia had 151 yards on 58 carries on the night, led by Bailey, who had 17 rushes for 70 yards. #
Seth Hinsley# added 17 carries for 59 yards and Dickey had 19 rushes for 56 yards. Eliezer had two receptions for 45 yards and a score.
The Wolves conclude the home schedule next Saturday at University Stadium against GSC newcomer Shorter. UWG will honor the 2012 senior class prior to that game, with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
