Carrollton, GA - One of the most anticipated matchups of the past five years is set to commence on Saturday, as two old rivals, the West Georgia Wolves and Valdosta State Blazers, renew their rivalry on Homecoming at UWG.
The game has been a rivalry for many years, with the winner taking home the coveted Peach Basket. Currently, the basket resides at the UWG Athletic Operations Building after West Georgia's 23-20 victory over the Blazers last season.
Both teams have had their ups and downs this season, with both teams coming up just short against West Alabama in their respective Gulf South Conference opening contests. VSU lost to UWA 39-28 two weeks ago in Valdosta while West Georgia was off. UWG had a pass fall short on 4th-and-2 from the UWA 47 last week in Livingston as the Tigers escaped with a 24-20 victory.
VSU is coming off of a romp over Edward Waters last week, as the Blazers moved to 3-2 with a 58-10 victory over the NAIA opponent. Valdosta State is outscoring opponents this season by a 43-20 margin and comes into Saturday's battle with a 3-2 record overall and 0-1 in GSC play.
West Georgia comes into the game averaging 37.5 points per game while giving up 25 points per contest. The Wolves feature a balanced offensive attack, averaging 208.5 yards per game on the ground and 203.9 yards per contest through the air.
