CARROLLTON, Ga. - Free-throws and second-half shooting were the difference in Saturday's Gulf South Conference matchup at The Coliseum, as the West Georgia Wolves shot 36 percent from the field in the second half en route to an 87-76 loss to the Alabama Huntsville Chargers.
The Wolves attempted just nine free-throws on the day, making five while the Chargers hit 16-of-20 from the charity stripe in the game. Junior
Seth Brown-Carter led the way for West Georgia with 26 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double at West Georgia. The McDonough native has flirted with a double-double on several occasions this season, but had not been able to break through for double-figures in both areas.
UAH came out of the gate fast, building a seven-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, leading West Georgia 27-20 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Brown-Carter,
Deng Nhial, and
Greg James went on a three-point frenzy in the final 10 minutes of the first half as the Wolves outscored the Chargers 26-19 in that span, sending the game to halftime in a 46-46 tie.
Over the final 10 minutes of the first half, Brown-Carter scored eight points, Nhial scored seven, and James had six points to lead the Wolves. In the first half, Brown-Carter had 16 of his 26 points.
Coming out of the locker room, Brown-Carter put the Wolves up quickly with a three-pointer to open the period, but that lead was short-lived. The Chargers built a nine-point lead midway through the second half and looked to be cruising. West Georgia made a run in the final six minutes, cutting the UAH lead to three at 72-69 with 3:33 left in the game. In the final three minutes, the Chargers outscored the Wolves 15-8 to take the victory.
Kadeim Jones and
Keshawn Heard also scored in double-figures on the day, with Jones putting up 12 points and Heard with 10 on the day.
The Wolves will be back in action at home next Thursday night, taking on the West Alabama Tigers in Gulf South Conference play. The doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m. at The Coliseum, with a special presentation for the 2020 UCA Champion Coed Cheerleading squad at halftime of the men's game.
