Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - Another defensive battle between the West Georgia Wolves and West Florida Argos had a similar result to the first meeting, as the Argos went on a 6-0 run on Thursday evening at the UWF Field House to hand a 61-57 loss to the Wolves in Gulf South Conference action.
The first seven minutes of the contest saw the Wolves hold a three-point advantage in a defensive struggle, a UWG led 9-6 with 15:51 left in the opening period.
Seth Brown-Carter and
Michael Zabetakis were the leaders offensively in the opening minutes of the contest, with Brown-Carter scoring the first five points and Zabetakis picking up a pair of layups to put the Wolves up.
West Georgia went cold over the next six minutes, as the Argonauts went on a 10-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 9:38 left in the first half. The Wolves' offense woke up at that point, going on a 19-15 run over the final 10 minutes of the period, heading into the locker room at the break trailing West Florida 31-28. Brown-Carter was on fire in the first half, scoring 17 points and leading the team with four rebounds as well.
The Wolves jumped out early in the second half, scoring five consecutive points to open the period before a three-pointer from West Florida put the Argos back on top at 34-33 at the first media timeout of the half. West Georgia picked up the ball movement and the Argos picked up the pace over the next four minutes as the two teams played to a draw at 41-41 with 11:55 left in the game.
Kadeim Jones was a big part of the UWG success early in the second half, as he moved into double-figures for the fifth consecutive game with just over 12 minutes to play on a layup for his 10th point of the game.
The rebounding game was big for the Wolves in the first 12 minutes of the second half. The two teams were knotted at 15 in the rebounding category at halftime, and West Georgia turned up the intensity in the second half, out-rebounding the Argos 16-10 in that span in building a slim 48-47 lead.
The two teams battled back-and-forth over the final eight minutes of the contest, with neither team leading by more than two points in the first six minutes of that span. With 2:20 left, UWG head coach
Dave Moore called timeout with the Wolves leading 57-55. Over the final two minutes of the contest, West Georgia went scoreless and as a 6-0 Argo run provided the final result.
Brown-Carter led the Wolves with 21 points, followed by Jones with 10 to round out the double-figure scorers. The loss drops the Wolves to 6-15 on the year and 4-9 against league competition while the Argos move to 8-7 in conference play and 11-11 overall. West Georgia will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Blazers of Valdosta State at The Complex in Valdosta, GA. at 4 p.m.
