Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - Two very evenly matched volleyball teams faced off in Gulf South Conference play on Friday evening in Jackson, TN.
Unfortunately for the West Georgia Wolves, the homestanding Union Bulldogs picked up solid points at the right times at Fred Delay Gymnasium as Union took a 3-0 victory over the Wolves.
Union 26, West Georgia 24
Union came out firing on all cylinders early in the match, taking a quick 7-2 lead in the opening moments of the first set. The Bulldogs won the race to 10 in the set, leading 10-4 at that point. West Georgia couldn't force any Union errors in the first 16 points of the set, as the Bulldogs led 16-8 with nine kills and just one error at that point. The Bulldogs took a 19-9 lead before West Georgia started to claw their way back into the set. The Wolves went on an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 23-20, then scored three of the next four points to make it 24-23 and forcing a Union timeout. UWG tied the set at 24, but Union scored the final two points of the frame to take a 26-24 victory and win the set.
Union 26, West Georgia 24
The second set was an epic battle throughout with neither team taking a lead of more than three points.
Tierra White continued her hot hitting, tying the set at 16-16. It became a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of the set, with Union taking a three-point lead at 19-16 before a trio of points from the Wolves tied it again at 19-19. Through that point in the match, the Wolves were very efficient in the hitting department with 18 kills to just one error. The Wolves pushed that into a run, going on a 7-2 run to take a 23-21 lead and force a Union timeout. The Bulldogs responded out of the timeout with three consecutive points to set themselves up for set point.
Kaylyn Buchanan extended the set with a kill that ended a long rally to tie the set at 24-24, but Union picked up the final two points to take another 26-24 win.
Union 25, West Georgia 22
The Bulldogs jumped out to a lead in this one, leading 16-11 near the midpoint of the set. But true to form on the night, the Wolves would not go quietly, going on an 11-5 run to take a 22-21 lead late in the set. The Bulldogs called timeout at that point to regroup and responded with four consecutive points to take a 25-22 victory.

White,
Emilee Harris, and Buchanan each had double-digit kills in the match, with Harris and White dealing out 11 kills each and Buchanan with 10.
Autumn Mayes had 34 assists, leading the UWG hitters to a .289 hitting percentage, but Union counted with a .308 hitting percentage.
West Georgia falls to 7-6 on the year and 1-3 in Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., taking on the Christian Brothers Bucs in Memphis, Tennessee.
