Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia finished up this year's GSC-SSC crossover with a loss to the 10
th ranked Tampa Spartans on Saturday afternoon.
UWG struggled to stop a high-powered Tampa offense as the Spartans accumulated 42 kills with a .365 hitting percentage to propel them over the Wolves 3-0 in the last match of the weekend.
In the first set, West Georgia was a step behind the Spartans as Tampa ran out to 15-4 lead midway through forcing a UWG timeout. Out of the timeout, the Wolves went on a mini 3-1 run before an attack error by West Georgia put a halt to the building momentum. With the score sitting at 16-7, the two teams began to trade points until Tampa won the set 25-14.
The second set started out similarly to the first with Tampa running out to a 12-6 lead. The Wolves began to find their footing with just one attack error coming in the set after Tampa took a 12-6 lead, but a combination of Tampa's defense and stellar hitting was too much for UWG to handle as Tampa took the set 25-18.
The third set was the most competitive of the match with West Georgia winning the race to 10 by one point. The two teams go kill-for-kill for majority of the set until kills from
Caitlin Frazee and
Taylor Spradley sparked a 3-0 run giving the Wolves a 21-18 lead, and forcing a Tampa timeout. Out of the timeout, the Spartans responded with a 7-2 run to win the set 25-23.
Emilee Harris led the Wolves in kills with 10 while
Autumn Mayes dished out 29 assists. West Georgia will be back in action on Friday when they take a trip to Huntsville, Alabama to take on Alabama Huntsville with first serve set for 7 p.m.
