CARROLLTON, Ga. – UWG Volleyball ended their regular season on a four-match winning streak with a 3-1 win over Valdosta State Saturday night.
A career performance from
Kaylyn Buchanan and solid team defense anchored the Wolves past the Blazers as UWG held VSU to a .106 hitting percentage on the night. The wins moves West Georgia over .500 as their record now stands 15-14 overall and 9-7 in the GSC at the season's end.
Blazers 25, Wolves 19
The first set saw the Blazers win the race to 10 with UWG right behind them with eight points of their own. A kill from Valdosta State sparked an 8-3 run to put VSU up 18-11 in the set. The Wolves fought to get back in the set as 5-1 run cut the deficit to five, but UWG was a step behind the Blazers as a service error from West Georgia clinched the set for VSU.

West Georgia started out much better in the second set as UWG raced out to an early 6-2 lead. Valdosta State responded to the early deficit with an 8-3 run to win the race to 10 once again. After the teams traded runs, the set turned into a back-and-forth affair which left the score tied at 15. With the set hanging in the balance, Valdosta state committed three straight errors to give West Georgia an 18-15 lead and forced a Blazer timeout. Out of the timeout, VSU responded by going on a 4-1 run to tie it up at 19. The two teams went toe-to-toe until
Caitlin Frazee won the set for the Wolves, 25-23.
Wolves 25, Blazers 22
The third set began just as the second set ended, very competitively, until
Kaylyn Buchanan sparked a 7-0 UWG run where Buchanan scored four of the seven points. VSU started to fight their way back in the set as they went on a 4-0 run to narrow the deficit to four before a kill from
Caitlin Frazee sparked another big West Georgia run that pushed the Wolves lead to eight. With the score sitting at 18-10, the Blazers caught fire and went on an 8-1 run to make it a one-point game in the set. Attack errors spoiled Valdosta State's comeback efforts as an attack error from the Blazers clinched the set for UWG, 25-22.
Wolves 25, Blazers 12
To begin the fourth set, the Wolves smelt blood, and were determined to close the show on this senior night as they took an 11-5 lead early. The Blazers fought back to make things interesting at the halfway mark of the set as the score read 14-10 before
Autumn Mayes helped UWG put the set out of reach with a 5-0 run to extend the West Georgia lead to nine. All the momentum was on the side of the Wolves as three straight errors from VSU won the set and the match for UWG.
Kaylyn Buchanan led the way with a career-high 20 kills while also recording two blocks.
Autumn Mayes dished 34 assists while
Sydney Blackmon picked up 18 digs. West Georgia will be back in action next Friday for the GSC Tournament with a first round matchup against Montevallo looming.
