Carter and Campbell Lead Wolves to Wild Win in Atlanta

UWG Defeats Clark Atlanta in Overtime

ATLANTA, Ga. – After a wild close to regulation, the UWG women's basketball team outscored Clark Atlanta in overtime to earn their first win of the season, defeating the Panthers 78-74 on their home floor.

After taking a lead with under two to play, the Wolves (1-1) surrendered the lead back with consecutive baskets from Clark Atlanta (1-2), but with six seconds on the clock, senior Tahya Campbell drilled a three-pointer to tie the game, and send it to overtime.

In overtime, West Georgia trailed by one with 1:20 to go, but would get back-to-back scores from Siera Carter to put the game away and earn the first win of the season.

Just four days after setting a new career high, Carter topped it again, going for 28 in the game on Tuesday night. Carter finished the game 11-of-25 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds.

After one quarter of play on Tuesday, the Wolves trailed 23-8, but continued to fight back, cutting it to five-point game by the halftime break.

Coming out of halftime, Clark Atlanta got their lead back to double-figures at the midway point of the third quarter, leading 51-40. The Panthers would outscore West Georgia 24-18 in the third quarter and lead by 11 with one quarter remaining.

Clark Atlanta would score on their first possession of the fourth quarter, but West Georgia would then rattle off a 14-0 run to take their first lead since the opening possession at 66-65 with 1:40 remaining. Then things looked bleak as Clark Atlanta scored the two baskets to go up by three, giving the Wolves the ball with 18 seconds left.

That's when Campbell would hit the three to send the game into overtime. In the OT period, it was back and forth until Carter would score the final five points of the contest.

Along with Carter's career high, UWG got 13 points from Campbell, 11 from Valencia Carroll, and 10 from Mariah Holder.

Carter had eight assists on the night, giving her a final stat line of 28 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.

On the glass, Jaylin Austin led the way with a career high 13.

The Wolves are idle for seven days, returning to action a week from Tuesday in the 2021-22 home opener as West Georgia hosts North Georgia on November 23 at 5:30 p.m.
