CARROLLTON, Ga. – Playing for much more than bragging rights in the regular season finale, the West Georgia Wolves soccer team ended the night at the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to archrival Valdosta State in Gulf South Conference action at University Field.
The winner of the game earned the fourth seed in the GSC Tournament, which begins on Sunday, giving them a first-round home game, and the loser to the road to open their postseason journey. With results around the league, UWG finished as the sixth seed in the 2021 GSC Tournament.
West Georgia (9-7-0, 7-6-0 GSC) came out hot on a night they were honoring three seniors, getting an early chance on a
Sadie Prince cross in the second minute that set up a corner kick. Freshman
Britton Slifka got a head to the cross, but it sailed over the net.
It would stay scoreless until the 19
th minute when Valdosta State (11-5-1, 8-4-1 GSC) scored on a corner kick off from Kyleigh Reedy that found the head of Barbara Kiger.
The next two goals in the game would come off of the corner kick, as Valdosta State made it 2-0 in the 59
th minute on another corner that bounced around the box, eventually finding the foot of Amber Saunders who buried the goal and gave the Blazers a cushion.
Hillary Resendiz scored her 14
th career goal in the 65
th minute, cutting the VSU lead to 2-1.
Florence Pegrum picked up the second assist of her career on Resendiz's goal.
UWG applied strong pressure to get an equalizer, but a penalty kick goal in the 80
th minute by the Blazers' Lexie Hall put the game away.
VSU had just one shot more than UWG with the final total being 16-15 while VSU had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
West Georgia was able to honor seniors

The Wolves travel to Delta State to take on the third-seed Lady Statesmen on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
