CARROLLTON, Ga. – In the final game before the Holiday break, the UWG women's basketball team was on the wrong end of a 67-46 Gulf South Conference decision against the West Alabama Tigers.
West Georgia (4-5, 1-3 GSC) played a good first half against West Alabama (9-3, 3-1 GSC), but went cold from the field in the second half.
The bright spot for the Wolves was Ranajah Verdell who recorded her first double-double. The freshman from Toccoa led West Georgia with 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss, and was 3-for-7 from the field.
In the opening quarter, West Georgia got off to a relatively slow start, only scoring seven points in the first eight minutes of the contest. Late in the period, Valencia Carroll took over, hitting two three pointers in the final 44 seconds to put West Georgia up two after a quarter of play.
The Wolves led by as much as five on two occasions in the second quarter, but when the half ended, West Alabama held a 31-29 advantage.
It was all West Alabama in the second half as the Tigers outscored UWG 36-17 in the final 20 minutes including a 21-6 advantage in the third quarter. West Georgia could not buy a shot in the second half as UWG was 1-for-10 from the field in the third quarter and 5-for-38 in the second half.
Valencia Carroll was UWG's second leading scorer with nine points on the night.
Three Tigers recorded double-doubles, led by Bria Dent who had 19 points and 14 rebounds. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett added 14 points and 11 rebounds while point guard Jala Williams had 11 points and 10 assists.
West Georgia is now idle until December 31 as the Wolves ring in 2022 by hosting Union on New Year's Eve at 2 p.m.
