Wolves Suffer Setback in Gulf South Slugfest

Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – In a game that featured a combined 42 hits and 36 runs, the University of West Georgia baseball team found itself on the short end of a Gulf South Conference slugfest when the dust finally settled at Cole Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolves suffered the 20-16 setback to Alabama-Huntsville to close out the three-game series for the 2021 home opener after splitting a twin bill on Saturday.

There was at least one run scored in every inning of the series finale, which featured a combined 12 pitchers, 16 extra-base hits and 12 walks before UAH senior right-hander Parker Warren recorded the final out of the game to cap off four and a half hours of action.

The Chargers (4-5, 4-5 GSC) had eight players with multiple-hit efforts, including three with four hits or more, while the Wolves (4-5, 4-5) had five players with at least two hits and two with four hits.

UAH jumped out to an 8-0 lead following a pair of four-run frames, but the Wolves put a dent in the deficit with a four-run bottom of the second, using an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore center fielder Garrett Sheffield, an RBI single from junior shortstop Cody Mish and a two-run double by sophomore second baseman Brody Wortham.

The Chargers responded with three runs in the third on back-to-back dingers from senior shortstop Zach Duvall and senior third baseman John Trousdale for the 11-4 margin.

The Wolves tacked on four more runs in the third and pulled within 11-10 in the fourth on a two-out, two-run double from junior left fielder Jason Fointno, but the Chargers answered in the top of the fifth with a two-run shot from senior left fielder Griffin Rivers.

UAH added a single run in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth before the Wolves staged one last rally.

West Georgia scored four runs in the home half of the ninth, highlighted by a three-run blast from junior third baseman Collin Moore to make it a four-run game before the Chargers finally recorded the final out of the game and series.

Sophomore catcher Colin Brewer (4-for-6, 2B, HR, 2 runs, 5 RBI), sophomore first baseman Landon Ezzell (4-for-7, 2B, 2 runs, 4 RBI) and Duvall (5-for-7, 2B, HR, 4 runs, 3 RBI) led the offensive attack for the Chargers.

UWG was led offensively by freshman designated hitter Jackson Webb (4-for-5, BB, 3 runs, RBI), Moore (4-for-6, HR, 3 runs, 3 RBI), Wortham (3-for-6, 2B, SB, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Fointno (2-for-3, 2B, SB, run, 3 RBI).

West Georgia hits the road next weekend for a three-game series at Delta State in Cleveland, Mississippi.
