Softball Defeats Flagler, Has Final Game Rained Out in Florida

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The West Georgia softball team won their only game of the final day of the Flagler Invitational, defeating the host Saints in the early afternoon before the final game of the tournament was rained out.

For the second straight day, it was a 3-0 decision for the good guys as the Wolves defeated Flagler by the same score as yesterday's season opener.

Kayla Hughes made her debut in the circle against the Saints, and did not disappoint as she teamed up with Macy Ann McKnight for the second shutout of the season for the UWG pitching staff.

Kristyn Nix got the Wolves started offensively, ripping a two-RBI double in the second inning that scored Madison Slappey and Chandler Mevis to give UWG an early lead.

From there, Hughes continued to cruise, finishing the day with four innings pitched, three hits allowed and a trio of strikeouts as she earned her first win in the West Georgia red and blue.

Freshman Macy Ann McKnight made her collegiate debut on Saturday, pitching three innings of one-hit relief and earning a save while fanning a pair.

Mevis added a third run in the seventh, singling home Hannah Scarbough.

Scarbrough was one of three Wolves with multi-hit games, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Mevis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while freshman Maddie Clark also went 2-for-3.

As a team, the Wolves finished with a season-high 10 hits and made one error defensively.

The Wolves were originally scheduled to take on Georgia Southwestern in the final game of the weekend, but the Florida weather washed that game off the schedule, sending the Wolves home with a 2-1 record to begin the campaign.

West Georgia will travel to Oxford, Alabama next Friday to take on Young Harris and then Columbus State on Saturday.
