CARROLLTON, Ga. – Playing midweek softball for the first time in 2021, the West Georgia Wolves did not disappoint on Wednesday, treating the home crowd to a doubleheader sweep over non-conference foe Georgia College.
The Wolves outscored Georgia College 14-2 on the afternoon, with 10 of those runs coming in a lopsided, six-inning 10-0 win. West Georgia held Georgia college scoreless until the sixth in game two, eventually winning thanks to a solid relief effort from
Lexi Close.
Close was big in game one as well, rattling off three hits and tallying four RBIs on the afternoon. Three of those RBIs came on a bases-clearing double that gave UWG the run-rule victory in game one.
West Georgia didn't need 10 runs in game one, thanks to yet another dominant performance in the circle from
Kya Draper. The sophomore righty gave up a hit and a walk while striking out 11 batters over just five innings of work, improving to 5-0 on the year with a sub-one ERA.
Senior
Cassie Henderson started the scoring in game one, singling home Close in the second inning.
In the next inning, West Georgia picked up two runs, scoring the first on a sacrifice fly from
Alley Taylor that scored
Hannah Scarbrough. Close then picked up her first RBI of the game on a single to center field.
West Georgia added another in the fourth, with
Kristyn Nix doubling home
Madison Slappey.
The sixth was the big inning for the Wolves as they pushed across six runs on four hits and a Georgia College error.
Kristyn Nix also had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Scarbrough also registered a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
In game two, West Georgia wasted no time in taking a lead as
Alley Taylor blasted her second home run of the season, a two-run bomb, to center field to make it an early 2-0 UWG lead.
Meanwhile,
Morgan Goree went to work in the circle and was cruising through five giving up just one hit through the first five innings. Goree had a three run lead as UWG added a run in the third on a
Chandler Mevis RBI single.
After the Bobcats cut the lead to one in the sixth, Goree gave way to Close who came on in relief for the second straight game, pitching 1.1 innings of no-hit relief to earn her second save of the season.
The Wolves did add one insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as
Leslie Brogden triple to right center and scored on a throwing error.
Both Mevis and BRogden had 2-for-3 performances in game two while Taylor had the big first inning home run.
The win improves the Wolves to 11-3 overall and gives them five straight wins. Georgia College falls to 4-10 on the year.
West Georgia is now idle until March 19 when they will host West Alabama in a three-game Gulf South Conference series at University Field.
