COLUMBUS, Ga. – The West Georgia Wolves softball team ran into a red hot pitching staff on Wednesday, falling in a non-conference doubleheader to Columbus State.
In game one, the Wolves offense was completely shutdown in a 4-0 loss. The Wolves had just five hits and struck out 19 times as CSU's Hannah Rose Corbin held the Wolves' bats at bay.
West Georgia (13-6, 9-3 GSC) fell behind in game one, as Corbin helped herself, slugging a first inning two-run homer off of
Morgan Goree, giving the Cougars the early 2-0 lead.
Columbus State (14-8, 2-2 PBC) added a run in the second to extend their lead to 3-0, and added an unearned run in the fifth to account for the final margin.
Goree pitched the entire game, going six innings and surrendering four runs on eight hits while striking out seven.
Alley Taylor had two of UWG's five hits in the opener.
In game two, the Wolves turned to freshman
Macy Ann McKnight in the circle. The Cougars scored a first inning run on McKnight, but the Wolves quickly answered with their first lead of the afternoon.
The lead flipped off the bat of
Maddie Gorsuch as the junior slugged her first career home run, driving in two runs to make it 2-1, Wolves.
From that point, West Georgia had just one hit in the final five innings. Corbin returned to the circle in game two, pitching the final two innings and striking out five to earn the save.
McKnight finished with four runs allowed in three innings of work before she gave way to
Lexi Close. The senior from Hillsboro, Missouri struck out six and gave up two hits in three innings of relief work.
The Wolves return home this weekend for a three-game GSC series against the Lee Flames. UWG and Lee begin the series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday afternoon at University Softball Field.
