ROME, Ga. – A five-run second inning and another stellar performance from
Kya Draper powered the Wolves past in-state rival Shorter by a 5-1 tally in the series opener on Friday afternoon.
Draper went the distance again, for her third complete game of the season while improving to 4-0 on the season.
The West Georgia offense gave Draper all the support she would need in the second, pushing across all five runs in the frame.
Alley Taylor led off the second with a double, later scoring on a sacrifice fly from
Leslie Brogden.
Following a walk and a single,
Kristyn Nix drove in
Madison Slappey and
Hannah Scarbrough to make it 3-0. In the process, Nix picked up RBIS nine and ten which leads the Wolves.
Kayla Hughes added two more with a home run to left field, her second of the season, making it 5-0 Wolves.
Draper struck out seven on the day and did not allow walks. The sophomore spread three hits out, allowing one earned run on the day.
The top third of the lineup combined for six of West Georgia's 11 hits with Hughes and Nix each driving in two RBIs each.
West Georgia improved to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in GSC play while Shorter fell to 4-8 overall with an 0-4 record in league play.
The series concludes tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader from Alto Park in Rome.
