Wolves Split Friday Twin Bill With 22nd-Ranked West Florida

CARROLLTON, Ga. – It was a doubleheader split for the UWG Wolves softball team on Friday as West Georgia defeated 22nd-ranked West Florida in game one before falling in game two.

Kya Draper gave the Wolves what they needed in game one, tossing seven innings of three-hit softball, allowing just one run as UWG came out with a 2-1 win.

But in game two, the Argo bats came to life, slugging four home runs in route to a 9-2 win.

Game One
Draper went toe-to-toe with Grace Gilbert in game one, coming out with the complete game victory in the series opener.

Neither team scored in the first four innings, but Draper did have to pitch around leadoff baserunners in each of the first three innings. She held strong, and the UWG offense got her a lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

Chandler Mevis got a single with one out and that was followed up by a Cassie Henderson single. Then with one out, Leslie Brogden beat out what would have been an inning ending double play to keep the frame alive. Madison Slappey then ripped a single, scoring Mevis and later Brogden as the throw in from the outfield got away from the UWF catcher.

With a 2-0 lead, Draper got a little help from Mevis who robbed former All-American Teala Howard of extra bases with a diving catch in the outfield. It proved to be even bigger when the next batter, Mika Garcia slugged a solo shot to cut the lead in half.

Draper shut down the Argo offense the rest of the way, not allowing any baserunners following the solo shot.

The sophomore from McDonough's final line was a complete game win with just three hits allowed with six strikeouts and one walk.

UWG had just four hits in the win with Alley Taylor, Mevis, Henderson, and Slappey registering singles. Slappey had the only RBI and finished 1-for-1 with the single and a sac bunt.

Game Two
The Argo offense was determined to prove something in game two as West Florida came out swinging with 11 hits in the game.

After two runners got on in the first on starter Morgan Goree, Ally Merrill doubled home a pair, giving UWF an early lead. Merrill later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Argos a 3-0 game before the Wolves touched a bat.

West Florida added a third run in the second chasing Goree after just 1.2 innings pitched.

Madison Slappey put the Wolves on the board with her third home run of the season in the second, driving home Ashley Ellison who had reached on a one-out single.

Lexi Close didn't fare well in relief, surrendering two runs on two home runs in just 0.2 innings pitched. Katie Foote came on in relief of her and was charged with three runs allowed on four hits in an inning of work.

The Argos slugged four home runs in the game two victory, but continued to be fooled by Kya Draper. She was the fourth pitcher of the game for the Wolves, and she tossed 3.2 innings of perfect relief, striking out six.

Slappey had the only RBIs in the game, giving her three for the day.
