MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UWG softball team took game one of the doubleheader, but fell in the finale, salvaging one game of this weekend's three game set at Auburn Montgomery.
The Wolves (17-8, 13-5 GSC) used a dramatic comeback in game one of the twin bill, winning game one, 4-3. Auburn Montgomery (21-5, 13-5 GSC) used a six run fifth to win the series finale and clinch a critical series win in Gulf South Conference play.
Game One
Things looked bleak late for the Wolves in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, but three-run seventh inning put the visitor's up and
Lexi Close shut the door on the Warhawks in the bottom half.
West Georgia took a lead in the contest as
Madison Slappey hammered home the game's first run with her second home run of the season. The lefty belted the ball deep to right center in the fifth inning, putting the Wolves up, 1-0.
But the Warhawks bounced right back and answered with a three-spot in their half of the fifth. With runners on the corners and one out, the Warhawks got a run as they got a runner in a rundown and sent the runner to steal home, tying the game. AUM took the lead later in the fifth on a two-run triple off the bat of Gracie Harris.
In the seventh, UWG was down to their last strike when
Kayla Hughes hit a pinch hit single. Slappey then came through with an RBI triple to make it a one-run game. After a walk put runners on the corners, senior
Ashley Ellison then tied it up as she drove Slappey home on an RBI single.
Alley Taylor gave UWG the lead as she singled down the third base line to score Scarbrough who earned the earlier base on balls.
In the bottom half,
Lexi Close allowed a baserunner, but then slammed the door shut on a Warhawks comeback.
Close had come on in relief of
Morgan Goree who allowed three runs on five hits in five innings of work.
UWG had just nine hits in the game with
Kristyn Nix,
Cassie Henderson, and Slappey each with two apiece.
Game Two
In the finale,
Kya Draper get the start and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. After allowing her first hit, she gave way to
Morgan Goree, who struggled in her second appearance of the day.
Goree gave up five hits in two innings of work and was charged with four of AUM's runs.
The UWG defense let Draper and Goree down in the fifth, allowing a pair of errors. AUM did have six hits in the fifth inning, helping the home team push across all six of the game's runs in that inning.
Offensively, the Wolves had just two hits with
Hannah Scarbrough ripping a single in the first at-bat of the game and
Cassie Henderson registering a fifth-inning single. The Wolves hit into three double plays in the game.
