OXFORD, Ala. – The University of West Georgia softball team capped off a wild opening day of the Gulf South Conference Tournament in a 10-0, second-round setback to top-seeded Auburn Montgomery at Choccolocco Park on Thursday evening.
After opening the tourney by capturing a 5-3, 10-inning thriller over No. 4 West Florida, the fifth-seeded Wolves (24-15) ran into the hottest ballclub in the GSC in the following round, as the Warhawks (37-5) extended their winning streak to 17 games after dispatching of No. 8 Montevallo earlier Thursday afternoon.
West Georgia will look to rebound and keep its tournament title hopes alive in a 1:30 p.m. elimination contest against No. 3 Alabama-Huntsville on Friday with the winner moving on to face No. 6 Mississippi College in the semifinals at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to Saturday's championship round.
West Georgia freshman
Kaley Dowdy got summoned to the circle in Thursday's nightcap due to an injury, and she held her own against the No. 1 team in the conference after only pitching one inning all season.
Dowdy kept the Wolves in the game by tossing two innings and yielding two earned runs before turning things over to senior
Lexi Close.
Close continued to keep the contest within reach until the Warhawks busted the game open in the late innings, as AUM scored seven runs over the final three frames to pull away.
West Georgia sophomore second baseman
Kristyn Nix, who went 3-for-5 in the tourney opener against West Florida, continued swinging a hot bat by delivering a 2-for-3 effort against AUM with a double.
