Wolves Fall Twice in Florida

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The first loss of the year came for UWG Volleyball on Friday afternoon in Winter Park, FL, as the Wolves fell 3-1 to the Anderson (SC) Trojans at the Rollins Invitational.

The late game didn't go the way of the wolf either, as the Wolves lost another 3-1 result against Florida Southern. The losses drop West Georgia to 4-2 on the year with matches against the University of Mary and host Rollins coming on Saturday morning and early afternoon.

Anderson 3, Wolves 1
Against the Trojans in the opener on Friday afternoon, the Wolves struggled in the hitting game, delivering on just 38 kills compared to 64 from Anderson in the match. West Georgia had just eight kills in each of the first two sets of the match while falling behind 2-0 with a 25-16 and a 25-21 loss.

In the third set, the Wolves jumped out to a 6-3 lead behind a pair of kills from Emilee Harris. The senior led the way in the match with 12 kills, marking four times in the first five matches of the year that the senior has had double-digit kills. West Georgia pushed the advantage out to five at 14-9 and the lead stayed between four and six points for the remainder of the match. Tierra White and Kaylyn Buchanan blasted the final two points of the set from the middle as the Wolves took a 25-21 victory to move within one at 2-1 in the match.

Both teams hit better than 20 percent in the fourth and final set, but the Trojans found open floor on four more occasions, taking a 25-21 victory to win the match. Autumn Mayes and Ainsley Schultz split the setter duties in the match, picking up 19 and 10 assists, respectively. Mayes added 14 digs and Blackmon had 19 digs to lead the back line for the Wolves.

Florida Southern 3, Wolves 1
In the late session, the Wolves came out firing with a win in the opening set. West Georgia kept things close with solid net play with nine blocks to six from the Mocs, but the Wolves couldn't manage more than 11 kills in any set on the opening day of the weekend tournament.

Led by four kills from White and three from Caitlin Frazee, the Wolves jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the early part of the opening set. Florida Southern fought back, pulling to within a point at 7-6 before UWG went on a 7-1 run to take a commanding 14-7 lead in the set. The Wolves kept the lead for the remainder of the set and an ace from Jesse Echols on set point sealed the 25-18 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match. As a team, West Georgia hit .258 in the first set, one of the top individual set hitting percentages of the year thus far.

Florida Southern turned the tables in the final three sets of the match, winning 25-21, 25-18, and 25-20 to hand the Wolves a 3-1 loss. White and Buchanan led the way with 11 and 10 kills, respectively in the match. Mayes was the lone setter in the second match, delivering on 33 assists and picking up 12 digs. Blackmon again led the back line with 16 digs in the match.
