CARROLLTON, Ga. - A late touchdown and a two-point conversion stunned the fifth-ranked Wolves on Saturday night as the Mississippi College Choctaws walked away from Ra-Lin Field with a 39-38 upset on UWG's homecoming.
After West Georgia (3-1, 1-1 GSC) scored with 3:44 left in the game, Mississippi College (2-3, 1-1 GSC) marched down and found the end zone on a Marcus Williams touchdown and successfully converted a two-point conversion to take the one point lead with just four ticks remaining.
Coming out of the gates, it was all West Georgia as the Wolves built a 21-3 lead, scoring twice on Jaxton Carson rushing touchdowns and once as Harrison Frost found Zion Custis on a nine-yard score.
Three turnovers, two in the redzone, plagued West Georgia as well, with UWG hanging 450 yards of offense in the game. Mississippi College had 382 yards of total offense and racked up 283 yards on the ground in their first win over UWG in Carrollton since 1991.
A key play in the opening half was a 32-yard touchdown reception by Sam Wilder with nine seconds left in the half that cut it to 21-10 at the break.
The Choctaws took their first drive of the second half and scored quickly to make it 21-17. UWG then got a touchdown from Tre Williams, who caught a seven yard pass from Frost for his first career touchdown, and made it 28-17.Â
Mississippi College answered right back with a five-play, 61-yard drive to cut it to five after a missed PAT attempt.Â
The first points of the fourth quarter came on a Brock Pellegrino field goal that pushed the lead to eight, and MC tied things up at 31-31 on their ensuing drive.Â
Jaxton Carson found the end zone for the third time of the game to put UWG up, and then Mississippi College pulled out the magic on the game winning drive, handing UWG their first loss of the season.
Carson ended the game with 104 yards on the ground, recording UWG's first 100-yard rushing performance of the season, and the three touchdowns. Frost ended the night 28-of-40 for 274 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Devonte Mathews had 12 tackles, which was the most in a single-game since 2018.
West Georgia is back at home next weekend, hosting West Florida in what should be a top-25 matchup at Ra-Lin Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on October 8.
