HOOVER, Ala. – UWG volleyball began day two of the 2022 South Region Crossover with a 3-0 loss to the Spring Hill Badgers Saturday morning.
West Georgia (9-15, 2-8) struggled to contain an explosive Spring Hill (20-7, 14-0) offense, as the Badgers recorded 46 kills on a .224 hitting percentage in the three-set match.
The Wolves quickly found themselves down 13-5 to begin set one, as Spring Hill's Brooke Borgmeyer put down her fourth kill to open the match. UWG responded in big part to Zoë LaBreche who delivered three kills that carried a 7-2 West Georgia run to make it a 15-12 game. After having their lead cut to three points, the Badgers scored four of the next six points to extend their lead back to five and forced the Wolves to burn their last timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, UWG blitzed Spring Hill, by using a 4-1 run to make it a two-point game, before the Badgers went on a 5-3 run to win the set, 25-21.
Set two got off to a competitive start, as we saw the game knotted at 10 to begin. The two squads traded blows, as neither team could go up by more than one point in the set, until Spring Hill took complete control of the set, using a massive 9-1 run to put West Georgia in a 21-13 hole. UWG battled to stay in the set, as kills from
Isabella Steffel,
Claire Conway, and
Emilee Harris kept the Wolves afloat, but the deficit was too much to overcome, with the Badgers taking the set, 25-16.
Set three was tight all the way to the end, with Spring Hill narrowly winning the race to 10 by one point. The Badgers could never create separation from the Wolves, as kills from LaBreche and
Caitlin Frazee kept West Georgia attached to Spring Hill. Down 18-15, UWG took a timeout and proceeded to use a mini 4-2 run, which was capped off by a
Kelli Kaiser service ace, to make it a 20-19 game. The teams would trade points, before a Spring Hill 4-0 run won the set, 25-20.
LaBreche led the way offensively with a team-high 11 kills, while
Autumn Mayes accumulated a team-high 27 assists and 14 digs.
West Georgia will end the South Region Crossover on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. with a matchup against the St. Leo Lions.
