CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia soccer team got back to their winning ways on Friday night, using a strong defensive performance to defeat the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks 3-0 on Friday night at University Field.
"We've been in a goal drought," said head coach
Stacey Balaam. "To get three today and to keep the clean sheet was really important for us," said Balaam.
The Wolves (6-6-4, 4-4-4 GSC) allowed just four shots from the Warhawks (3-10-2, 3-7-2 GSC) all night, and zero found the target.
Chanceley Book made her first start of the season, notching the clean sheet for the Wolves in the goal.
Freshman
Catherine Reeves got the scoring started for West Georgia in the 18th minute on a shot from outside the box that found the top corner, giving the Wolves the early 1-0 advantage.
Reeves was not finished, however, as the Berkhamsted, England native found the back of the net once again in the first half, this time in the 35th minute, giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead going into the half.
"Catherine was brilliant today. I had to give her a rest in the second half because she's put in a lot of minutes and we're edging to the end of the season and we need her for Sunday. She's someone that we know is going to continue to get better everyday and we're excited for her and her future," said Balaam of her Freshman midfielder.
West Georgia attempted six shots in the half, with three of them going on frame, with just two coming from the Warhawks in the frame.
Jayden Boswell added another goal for West Georgia in the 66th minute, putting her shot in the top left corner from way outside the box, giving the Wolves a 3-0 lead, which would hold until the final whistle.
West Georgia finished the contest with 24 shots, the fourth time this season the Wolves have posted 20+ shots in a contest, with 11 being on frame. West Georgia also dominated the corner kicks category, firing eight on the contest to just one from the Warhawks.
West Georgia will now turn their focus to the Montevallo Falcons who come to University Field on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
