Wolves Drop First Match of Homestand to Falcons

CARROLLTON, Ga. – UWG Volleyball dropped the first match of their three match homestand on Friday, as West Georgia fell 3-1 to the Montevallo Falcons.

The Wolves struggled to keep up with Montevallo's high-powered offense, as the Falcons had five players finish with double-digit kills, leading to their four-set win.

West Georgia led the opening set early, winning the race to 10 with a 10-6 lead. From there, the Falcons went on a 6-1 run to claim their first lead at 12-11, and then extended the lead to 14-11 which forced head coach Kara Hellmann into her first timeout of the match. The Wolves would get within one, but Montevallo eventually took the early advantage, winning the set 25-22.

In the second set, it was back-and-forth early until a 5-1 run forced a Montevallo timeout with the Wolves leading 15-11. Fueled by four service aces and four blocks in the set, West Georgia would never relinquish the lead, and even the match with a 25-22 decision.

Montevallo got the early advantage in the third set, winning the race to 10 with a four-point lead and forcing a UWG timeout. Out of the timeout, Montevallo went on a 5-1 run to extend the lead and force another timeout. UWG fought all the way back to a one-point deficit at 18-17 on a service ace by Emilee Harris but would only score twice more in the set.

West Georgia trailed for much of the early part of the fourth set, until Ellie Fox went for three straight points to turn the deficit into a 14-12 advantage. From there it was all Montevallo as they took the set, 25-17.

Harris led the way offensively with a team-high 10 kills while Sarah Pipping finished two behind her with eight. Defensively, Sydney Blackmon picked up team-high 17 digs while Caitlin Frazee recorded a career-high six blocks.

The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. matchup against the Alabama Huntsville Chargers.
