Wolves Go Perfect on Saturday After Wins Over Bucs, Lynx

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – UWG Volleyball ended a perfect 2-0 on Saturday after defeating the Christian Brothers Buccaneers, 3-2, and the Rhodes College Lynx, 3-1.

Match One Against Christian Brothers:

Redshirt Junior Caitlin Frazee stayed red hot on Saturday, recording a career-high 16 kills on a .233 hitting percentage and four blocks to propel the Wolves over the Bucs in the first match of the day.

The Bucs came out fast in the first set, putting the Wolves in a 10-6 hole to begin. A kill from Frazee put a halt to Christian Brother's momentum for a moment, before the Bucs quickly got it back by going on an 8-3 run to extend their lead to 18-9. UWG started to find their rhythm, as the Wolves used a 4-0 to stay alive in the set before CBU's Jordan Allen won the set, 25-16, with a kill.

The momentum the Wolves found at the end of set one carried over to set two, as UWG took an early 13-8 lead after a kill from Sarah Pipping capped off a 6-0 run. Christian Brothers answered the Wolves run with a 3-1 run to cut UWG's lead to 14-11, until back-to-back kills from Frazee put West Georgia back up by five. The Wolves struggled to pull away from the Bucs, as Christian Brothers used a 6-3 run to make it a two-point game, before back-to-back kills from Pipping sparked a 6-3 run for West Georgia to clinch the set, 25-20.

West Georgia got off to a fast start in set three, taking a 10-5 lead on CBU to put pressure on the Bucs early. The Wolves would keep their foot on the gas as a block from Sanai Young started a 7-2 run for UWG to give West Georgia a commanding 17-7 lead. The Bucs hung around in the set before another kill from Frazee won the set, 25-14, for the Wolves.

With their backs against the wall, Christian Brothers came out firing on all cylinders in set four as the Bucs took a 13-10 lead. The two teams then traded points before CBU used a 4-0 run to extend the Wolves deficit to 18-12, forcing coach Kara Hellmann to take a timeout.  Out of the timeout, UWG responded in a big way, by scoring six unanswered points to tie the game at 19. A kill from Young and a ball handling error from CBU gave UWG their first lead of the set at 21-20, before Christian Brothers rattled off five of the next seven points to win the set, 25-23.

The Bucs took a 9-6 lead in the winner take all fifth set which forced coach Hellmann to burn her first timeout of the set. A kill and a service ace from Autumn Mayes completely flipped the momentum of the set, giving it all to the Wolves as those back-to-back points from Mayes sparked an 8-2 run for West Georgia to give them match point at 14-11. CBU created some anxiety for the Wolves, by scoring back-to-back points until an Emilee Harris kill ended the set, 15-13, and the match.

Along with Frazee's 16 kills and four blocks, Mayes picked up 22 digs while Young recorded six blocks.

Match Two Against Rhodes:

Autumn Mayes, who picked up the first triple-double of any West Georgia player this season by recording 12 kills, 35 assists, and 10 digs, led a UWG offense that accumulated 55 kills on a .296 hitting percentage in route to the Wolves 3-1 win over the Lynx.

Rhodes got off to a quick start to begin, taking a 10-6 lead over West Georgia. Down four, UWG found their flow as an attack error from Rhodes and two kills from both Sarah Pipping and  Mayes carried a 5-1 West Georgia run to tie the game at 11. Rhodes responded with a quick 3-0 run before a 4-0 run for the Wolves put UWG up 15-14 and forced a Lynx timeout. Out of the timeout, Rhodes scored seven unanswered points to put the Wolves in a 21-15 hole. A couple of moments later, West Georgia found themselves two points away from dropping the set as the Wolves trailed 23-17 before a kill from Mayes sparked a 7-0 run to give UWG match point, leading 24-23. The two teams would then go back-and-forth, extending the set until Rhodes won the set 29-27.

The second set was all West Georgia, beginning with a kill from Emilee Harris giving the Wolves an early 10-3 lead. Four unanswered points from Rhodes cut UWG's lead to three until West Georgia put the set out of reach, by using a 6-1 run to double up the Lynx at 16-8. Down by eight, Rhodes tried to steal the momentum from the Wolves, as the Lynx scored three straight points to cut West Georgia's lead to five until UWG went on a massive 9-2 run to win the set, 25-13.

West Georgia blitzed Rhodes once again in set three by taking a massive 16-5 lead after a kill from Caitlin Frazee. Down by 11 in the set, Rhodes needed a big push to get back in it and they just got that as the Lynx went on an 8-2 run to cut the Wolves' lead to five and forced a UWG timeout. West Georgia threw their counterpunch out of the timeout as UWG went on a 7-3 run, with a Sanai Young kill clinching the set, 25-16, for the Wolves.

For the third straight set, UWG looked steps ahead of Rhodes as West Georgia took a 10-5 lead to begin the fourth set. The Wolves continued to keep their distance from the Lynx as a block from Frazee extended West Georgia's lead to 15-9, before UWG completely pulled away from Rhodes, by scoring four of the next five points to take a 19-10 lead. The Wolves would never let the Lynx get close as Pipping ended the set, 25-13, and the match with her patented hard-hitting swing.

Alongside Mayes career performance, Harris picked up 16 kills while Pipping added 10 kills of her own.

West Georgia will be back in action on Friday at 6:00 p.m. for the season finale against the Valdosta State Blazers.
