CARROLLTON, Ga. – It was a rough start to the road trip for UWG volleyball, as the Wolves fell in straight sets to the West Alabama Tigers on Friday.
UWG (9-12, 2-7 GSC) struggled on the attack, turning in their lowest hitting percentage of the season at .010, while West Alabama (6-14, 1-7 GSC) hit .181 which led to a 3-0 loss for West Georgia.
It was a disastrous start for the Wolves in set one, as they quickly fell behind 8-0, forcing coach
Kara Hellmann to burn her first timeout. West Georgia responded with a 4-0 run out of the timeout, but the early deficit and the hitting struggles were too much to overcome, as West Alabama took the set 25-15.
UWG hit the ball a lot better in set two, but a couple of service errors led to an 11-7 UWA lead early. The struggles with the serve continued for the Wolves as their fourth service error of the set gave the Tigers a 18-11 lead and forced a West Georgia timeout. UWG looked like a completely different team out of the timeout, as two attack errors and one service error from West Alabama sparked a 9-4 run to make it a 22-20 game, shifting the momentum in favor of the Wolves. West Georgia continued to put pressure on West Alabama before a kill from outside hitter, Chyna Dixon, won the set, 25-23, for the Tigers.
The momentum from the second set carried over to the third, as UWG took a commanding 11-3 lead after a block from
Claire Conway. West Alabama quickly responded with a 5-0 run to cut the Wolves lead to 11-8, before a block from
Sanai Young and Zoë LaBreche got the West Georgia lead back up to 16-11. After more back-and forth action, UWG held a 22-19 lead late in the set, until a 7-2 West Alabama run won the set, 26-24, and the match for the Tigers.
Sanai Young led the way offensively with six kills and three blocks on a .417 hitting percentage, while
Autumn Mayes picked up 13 digs.
West Georgia will now head to Clinton, Mississippi for a 12:00 p.m. EST matchup with the Mississippi College Choctaws on Saturday.
