GREENWOOD, S.C. – It took eight innings, but the UWG softball team was victorious in game one of the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic, defeating Erskine 3-2 in extra innings.
 
Hannah Scarbrough had three hits in the game, scored two, and drove in two of UWG's three runs as the Wolves earn their second win of the young season.
 
After a scoreless top half of the first, Scarbrough put the Wolves up with a lead-off home run to center field, giving the Wolves the 1-0 lead.
 
Scarbrough scored another run in the third, reaching on a bunt single, and later scoring on an Erskine wild pitch.
 
Macy Ann McKNight got the start in the circle for the Wolves, and effectively pithed around six walks in the first five innings.
 
McKnight no-hit the Flying Fleet for 5.1 innings before a single caromed off her foot and through the left side for a single. That baserunner would be Erskine's first run as Maddie Ingram would drive in the run, and then Ingram would score on an RBI double from Katie Hunter.
 
Kaley Dowdy would come on in relief in the seventh innings and pitch two innings, shutting Erskine down in the process. For her efforts, Dowdy would earn the win thanks to Scarbrough's eighth inning walkoff.
 
Playing under the international tie breaker, Scarbrough would knock in the game-winner in walk-off fashion for the Wolves.
 
Up next for West Georgia (2-2) is a game this evening against Lander.
 
Notable Numbers
- Scarbrough's home run was the sixth of her career and the second leadoff homer of her career. The other leadoff shot came against West Florida on March 7, 2020.
- Dowdy picked up the first win of her career.
