GREENWOOD, S.C. – The UWG Softball team took game one of the final day of the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic on Sunday, defeating Frostburg State, 4-3.
The Wolves (3-3) took a lead after one inning, and never relinquished the lead, although Frostburg State (0-3) mounted a small comeback that came up short.
UWG starter
Macy Ann McKnight got the first two outs of the game quickly, but a single, a walk, an error, and then a bases loaded walk would bring in the game's first run and give the Bobcats an early lead.
The Wolves wasted no time in getting on the board as UWG pushed three runs across in the bottom half of the first inning. After singles from
Hannah Scarbrough and
Isabella Pinto, junior
Kristyn Nix ripped a triple to score two, and Nix would later score on an RBI groundout by
Chandler Mevis.
One inning later, it was Nix again legging out a triple and then coming home to score on a productive out by Mevis, pushing the UWG lead to 4-1.
McKnight got into some trouble in the fourth, hitting a batter with the bases loaded, and walking in a run to make it 4-3, West Georgia.
Kaley Dowdy came in from the bullpen and was able to limit the damage by inducing a flyout to the first batter she faced.
West Georgia had just one hit over the final three frames, but Dowdy kept the Bobcat offense at bay, earning a save.
Offensively, Nix had the only multi-hit game and drove in two RBIs, but the Wolves did get another pair of RBIs from Mevis.
Notable Numbers
- Kristyn Nix became the first UWG player since 2019 to hit two triples in the same game. The last player to do so was Alley Taylor against Union in the 2019 GSC Tournament.
- Dowdy's save was the second of the season for the sophomore and the second of her career.
- McKnight earned the win, moving to 2-2 on the season, and earning the third win of her career.
