Argos Sweep Wolves in GSC Softball Opener

PENSACOLA, Fla. – It wasn't an ideal start to Gulf South Conference play on Saturday as the Wolves fell in a Saturday doubleheader to the 21st-ranked West Florida Argonauts at the UWF Softball Complex.

West Georgia (4-7, 0-2 GSC) gave up 20 runs in the doubleheader while West Florida (7-3, 2-0 GSC) held the Wolves to four runs over 10 innings.

Game One
Five of the first six Wolves struck out to begin the opener and West Georgia didn't get their first of two hits until the fourth inning. Meanwhile, West Florida struck for a single run in the second on two hits and broke it open in the third.

After making it 2-0 with a single, a stolen base, and another single the Argos struck for a grand slam by Angela Agurkis to run the lead to 6-0 and chasing UWG starter Macy Ann McKnight.

The Wolves got a run back in the fourth as Chandler Mevis doubled and later scored on a throwing error on the back end of a Kristyn Nix single.

Two more runs on two hits for the Argos in the fourth made it an eight-run game, and after pitching around a leadoff walk in the fifth, the Argos secured the win in five innings.

Mevis and Nix had the only two hits in the game for UWG while West Florida had eight hits and committed an error.

Game Two
The second game started much better offensively for the Wolves as Nix singled in her first at bat and then quickly stole second and scored on an Alley Taylor RBI single.

Unfortunately, West Florida would tag Emma Worley for four straight hits to begin the bottom half, and when the dust had settled, the Argos had scored four runs on five hits to take a 4-1 lead to the second.

It wasn't until the third inning that UWG would score again, this time pushing two runs across. Senior Hannah Scarbrough would lead off the inning with a home run down the right field line and then Chandler Mevis followed that up with a double. She would score on yet another RBI single by Alley Taylor.

The score would stay at 4-3 until the Argos got six runs on four hits, two walks and an error in the bottom half of the fourth. A single run on double in the fifth would end game two in a run-rule.

West Georgia had six hits in the game including two each from Mevis and Taylor.

Notable Numbers
- Scarbrough's home run is the third of the season which leads the team. It was her eighth career home run.
- Alley Taylor picked up two RBIs to run her season total to 10. That number leads the team and is tied for eighth in the Gulf South Conference.
