Wolves Split Saturday Double Header

Sam Lander Walks Off Game Three to Win Series Over AUM

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Saturday at Cole Field proved to be even more wild and crazy than Friday. The Wolves would split the double header, losing game one 8-4 and winning game two 6-5 on another walk off home run, this time by Sam Ladner

In game one, the Warhawks would outhit the Wolves 19 to seven, and that would make all the difference in the outcome.

The Wolves (8-6 2-4 GSC) came into the game riding high after a walk off winner in game one on Friday night, but quickly got snapped out of that trance, as AUM struck for two runs in the very first inning.

Jack Rasmussen would get the start on the mound, as he would have an uncharacteristic outing, only pitching 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, no walks and two strikeouts.

West Georgia would answer right back in the bottom of the second, thanks to a Jonathan Logsdon three run homerun, putting the Wolves up 3-2 after two innings of play.

That lead would be short lived, however, as the Warhawks would push across two in the top of the third, taking a 4-3 lead. Jonathan Hickman would be the first out of the bullpen for the Wolves, as he came in during the third inning, charged with keeping the deficit at just one.

Tensions would flare from both dugouts after the final out in the top of the fifth, causing the ejections of both head coaches.

Immediately following the scuffle, Brody Wortham would send his fourth home run of the season over the left center wall, and tie the ball game back up at 4-4.

The Wolves offense would go cold after that point, only getting one more hit in the ballgame, which was a lead off double in the 9th by Jackson Webb.

Auburn Montgomery (10-7' 1-2 GSC) would bring in Jax Morris out of the bullpen in the fifth to relieve starter Clayton Slagle. Morris pitched to the tune of 4.1 innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, four walks and two strikeouts.

The story of the game was missed opportunities for the Wolves, as they would hit into four double plays in the game, two of which would end an inning.

In game two, it looked like more of the same was on the horizon for the Wolves. Andrew Smith would make his first start of the season, but would be removed from the contest due to precautionary reasons. Smith would finish with 3 innings pitched, allowing no runs on three hits, one walk and one strikeout.

In the third inning, Brody Wortham would get the scoring started, as he blasted his second home run of the day over the left field fence to give the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.

In the forth, the Warhawks would erupt for five runs, including an RBI double from Zach Feaster, and RBI singles from Matthew Marfice and Zach Dew. Austyn Wright would come on in relief of Smith, and finish the fourth inning.

In the sixth, Collin Moore would lead off the inning with a double, followed by a single from Fuzzy Furr. After Logsdon reached on a hit by pitch, Anthony Calabro delivered a two out, two RBI single to cut the lead to 5-3.

Austyn Wright would retire the Warhawks in order for three innings straight, sending the Wolves to the bottom of the seventh, with a chance to win the baseball game. Wright would finish with four innings, allowing four runs on five hits, one walk, and one strikeout.

In the seventh, Brody Wortham would draw a walk, followed by a Collin Moore double which put runners at second and third with one out. Wortham would score on a balk call, which advanced Moore to third. Then, Sam Ladner took a page out of Logsdon's notebook and blasted a two run home run over the left field fence to walk off game three.

The Wolves took the series two games out of three, and won the first GSC series at home in 2022. The Wolves are back in action on Tuesday, March 1 when they travel to Americus, GA to take on Georgia Southwestern. First pitch is set for 4p.m.
