CARROLLTON, Ga. – It was a Saturday to forget for the UWG softball team as the Wolves were swept in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader to Delta State at University Field.
DSU outscored West Georgia (10-14, 4-9 GSC) 32-11 in the doubleheader, winning both games in five innings. The Lady Statesmen (13-12, 6-6 GSC) took game one, 19-10 and the second game by a 13-1 final to clinch the series victory on Saturday.
Game One
The bats were certainly hot for West Georgia in the series opener, but despite 10 runs on 10 hits including four home runs, the Wolves gave up 14 hits and committed five errors in the game one loss.
Neither team scored in the first two innings, but Delta State struck for seven in the third to open the scoring. They did it on four hits and a UWG error to open up the big lead.
But the hottest hitter in the Gulf South Conference got the Wolves back in it with a third inning grand slam. Singles from
Maddie Gorsuch,
Hannah Scarbrough, and
Kristyn Nix set Janke up for the big swing and the Dalton native deposited the 3-1 pitch over the right center fence to cut the deficit to three.
Delta State would answer right back with eight runs on seven hits and four errors in the top of the fourth.
Gorsuch got two runs back on a home run of her own in the bottom half of the fourth. She knocked in
Jacie Arrington on the big fly after Arrington got on with a one-out single.
Both teams got four runs in their fifth innings and most if it came via the home run. Olivia Burns hit a three-run pinch hit home run for DSU, and Janke hit her second of the game in the bottom half, this one a three-run home run. The fourth UWG run of the fifth came on a home run from
Jacie Arrington.
Nix, Janke, Arrington, and Gorsuch combined for eight of UWG's 10 hits in game one.
Game Two
The second game of the twin bill was all Delta State. It didn't start out lopsided as DSU only led 3-1 after the third inning, but broke it open in the fourth and fifth.
The lone UWG run came from doubles by Nix and
Emma Bailey in the third inning.
After that run though, Delta State scored seven runs in the fourth, and three in the fifth, slugging three home runs in the final two frames.
The Wolves had just four hits in game two while the Lady Statesmen had 13.
Notable Numbers
- Janke put up the first multi-homer game since Alley taylor hit two against Lee on March 26, 2021. One of Taylor's home runs on that day was also a grand slam. Janke now leads UWG in home runs with five and RBIs with 19.
- Gorsuch's home run was the second of the season for the Richmond Hill native. She now has three home runs in her career.
- Arrington also has three home runs in her career. Today's was the first of the season for the fifth-year senior.
