ALBANY, Ga. – The UWG softball team snapped a seven-game skid on Wednesday, defeating previously unbeaten Albany State in both games of a non-conference doubleheader in Albany.
West Georgia (6-11) used the run-rule to defeat the Golden Rams in game one, 10-2, before knocking off Albany State (14-2) in the finale, 5-2. It was the first win since game one of the Georgia College series on February 15 for the Wolves.
Game One
The Wolves wasted no time in getting the bats going on Wednesday afternoon, pushing three runs across in the top of the first inning.
Hannah Scarbrough led off with a walk, promptly stole second, and then came across on an RBI single from
R.J. Janke. Freshman
Bailey Christol, who also reached on a walk, scored the game's second run on a
Chandler Mevis single. The third run of the frame came across as
Emma Bailey single home Janke.
Albany State responded with a run of their own in the bottom half, as a UWG error would score an unearned run.
UWG starter
Macy Ann McKnight settled in after that, giving up just two hits the remainder of the game. The Ringgold, Georgia native pitched her second complete game of the season, giving up just two unearned runs on two hits.
Meanwhile, the UWG offense gave her plenty of support, adding a fourth run in the second. It was Scarbrough again getting it started as she singled and then stole second and third. Janke would drive her in this time on a sacrifice fly.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that UWG would add more to the lead as doubles by Janke and Mevis plated a single run to stretch the lead to 5-1.
ASU would get their second run in the bottom half of the fifth, but UWG would respond with a six-run sixth inning.
Three consecutive errors by the Golden Rams would get one across before a
Kristyn Nix single scored another. Leading 7-2, the Wolves then got a two-RBI single from freshman
Ava Ramirez, and
Chandler Mevis' third hit of the game made it a 10-2 UWG lead.
McKnight would sit the Golden Rams down in the sixth to earn the win.
Six starters would register hits in the win, including multi-hit games from Janke and Mevis. Both Janke and Mevis, along with Ramirez would knock in multiple RBIs, led by Mevis with three.
Game Two
West Georgia waited until the second inning to get the scoring started in game two. Janke remained hot at the plate as she homered in her first at-bat to make it 1-0, UWG. Nix then singled and stole second, only to score easily on a double by
Jacie Arrington.
Madison Vandergriff would then single home Arrington, to give UWG a 3-0 lead in the second.
Freshman
Rylee Green added to the lead in the fourth, slugging a two-run shot that scored Mevis and stretched the lead to 5-0.
A leadoff walk and a hit by pitch led to a fourth inning run for Albany State, as UWG starter
Kaley Dowdy surrendered her first run of the game. Dowdy would be charged with an unearned run in the sixth, as an error made it a 5-2 game.
In the seventh, the Golden Rams loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. At that point, head coach
Al Thomas went back to McKnight who came in and got the final two outs to earn the save.
Dowdy picked up the win, giving her two on the season.
Offensively, the Wolves had nine hits and were led by a 3-for-4 performance from senior
Alley Taylor.
