Wolves Take Game One From Statesmen

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia Baseball took down Delta State on Saturday in game one of the series by a final score of 6-4.

Austyn Wright made his first start of 2022 for the Wolves, and he turned in one of his better performances of the season, finishing with three innings pitched, only allowing one hit, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts.

The Wolves (12-9, 5-7 GSC) got the scoring started in the very first inning. After a one out walk by Brody Wortham, Sam Ladner would drive him in with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Jackson Webb would ground out to the second baseman, driving in Ladner from third, giving the Wolves an early 2-0 lead.

West Georgia added on in the third inning, thanks to a 2 run home run off the bat of Collin Moore, extending the lead to 4-0.

Delta State (12-7, 7-5 GSC) finally broke through in the fourth inning on a throwing error by Ladner, making the score 4-1 headed into the middle innings.

Collin Moore once again put the Wolves on the board, this time with a 2 RBI single, scoring Anthony Calabro and Brody Wortham, extending the lead to 6-1.

The Wolves bullpen was used multiple times as Jeff Smith would call upon five different pitchers after Wright exited the contest. Those five would combine for six innings, only giving up five hits, four runs, three walks, and six strikeouts, keeping the Statesmen's offense at bay for the game.

Delta State started chipping away at the lead in the eighth inning, scoring three in the inning, including a two-run home run off of the bat of Jake Barlow, making the score 6-4 headed into the ninth.

In the ninth, Ronny Piepmeier was called upon to close the game for the Wolves. After giving up a lead off walk, Piepmeier retired the next three Statesmen in order to secure the victory for West Georgia.

The series is set to conclude on Sunday with a double header beginning at 12p.m.
