ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The UWG Softball team split a Tuesday doubleheader in the Sunshine State, winning game one at Eckerd before falling in the second game.
West Georgia (11-16) came from behind in game one to defeat Eckerd (16-10), but in game two, the Wolves couldn't erase a four-run deficit and fell to the Tritons.
Game One
West Georgia was down a run in the sixth inning, but scored four runs in the final two innings to come back and earn the win.
Alley Taylor began game one with a bang, as following a
Chandler Mevis single, Taylor lifted a ball to right field, that carried over the fence for a first-inning home run and a 2-0 lead.
Eckerd got a run back off of UWG starter
Macy Ann McKnight, cashing in on a leadoff walk. But he Wolves answered right back with a run in the top of the second as a leadoff walk drawn by
Jacie Arrington would score on a
Kristyn Nix sacrifice fly.
In the third, Eckerd got a run in to make it a one run game, and then scored two in the fifth to chase McKnight and take their first lead of the contest.
A clutch, two-out double from Mevis gave UWG the lead back in the sixth as
Bailey Christol and Nix came around to score to make it a 5-4, Wolves lead.
West Georgia got two insurance runs in the seventh inning, the first coming on an RBI double from
Jacie Arrington. The next batter was
Katie Hassenboehler who struck out on a dropped third strike, but to her credit hustled down the line and forced an errant throw, allowing Arrington to score.
Kaley Dowdy, who pitched in relief of McKnight earned the win tossing the final three innings of the contest.
Each of the top three in the UWG order, Nix, Mevis, and Taylor had two hits in the game and combined for five RBIs.
Game Two
Eckerd struck first in game two as Brenna Lokeinsky hit a second-inning grand slam off of
Emma Worley to take a 4-0 lead.
Two innings later, West Georgia got on the board with a home run of their own, with Arrington smashing her second of the season, picking up three RBIs in the process, and cutting the deficit to just one run.
But two hits and four walks for Eckerd in the bottom half would yield three runs as the Tritons added to their cushion, making it a 7-3 contest.
After Eckerd got one in the bottom of the fifth, West Georgia got two in the next half inning to cut it back to a three-run game. After singles from Christol and
Lauren McElhaney, Nix would pick up an RBI on a groundout, and Mevis would beat out an infield hit to score another to put the score at 8-5.
Janke hit an absolute bomb of a home run in the seventh to account for the final score of 8-6.
Every UWG starter had a hit as the Wolves had 15 total hits in the loss, including a 3-for-3 performance from sophomore catcher
Lauren McElhaney. Mevis, Taylor, Vandergriff, and Christol each had two hits in the game.
Worley was charged with the loss in the circle allowing six runs in three innings pitched.
