Softball Swept by Florida Southern in Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. – The UWG softball team fell short in both ends of a Wednesday doubleheader at Florida Southern to wrap up a short trip to the Sunshine State.

West Georgia (11-18) gave up 10 unanswered runs in game one to lose the opener, and could not a get a clutch hit in game two, falling to Florida Southern (12-14), by a single run, 2-1.

Game One
Things started well for the Wolves, putting up three runs in the top of the first. It began with a single from Kristyn Nix, who later scored after a Chandler Mevis walk and an Alley Taylor single. Mevis then scored on a wild pitch and Taylor scored on a groundout RBI by Hannah Scarbrough.

During that first inning, UWG chased the Florida Southern starter, Lane Edgington, and from that point, the Mocs' reliever, Mel Rogers held UWG to no runs and just three hits over the remainder of the contest.

Meanwhile, Florida Southern's offense scored one in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth to take a 10-3 lead into the fifth inning.

Nix and Scarbrough combined for four of UWG's five hits on the day with Taylor picking up the fifth. Emma Worley was charged with the loss in the circle.

Game Two
The Wolves struck first in game two as well, plating a second inning run off of an Ava Ramirez double that scored Scarbrough.

But the Mocs came right back and tagged Kaley Dowdy with a run in the second and a run in the third to take the lead, and it was all they would need.

West Georgia had eight hits in game two, including multi-hit games from Mevis, Janke, and Ramirez, but stranded 10 runners on base including two in scoring position in the top of the seventh.

Macy Ann McKnight was very effective in relief, allowing just one one hit in three innings pitched.

Notable Numbers
- R.J. Janke was 0-for-3 in game one, ending her 15-game hitting streak, but the sophomore did draw a walk to make it 17 straight games that she has reached base, and extended it with two hits in game two.
- Kristyn Nix had hits in both games and now has the longest hitting streak on the team at 14. Nix also legged out a triple in game two, giving her four on the season. That ties her for the GSC lead in triples and ranks tied for 15th in all of Division II.
