MONTEVALLO, Ala. – An eight-run second inning by the opposition was the demise of the UWG softball team on Friday as the Wolves fell 11-6 in a Gulf South Conference series opener at Montevallo.
West Georgia (14-20) put up four runs in their half of the second, and the Falcons then scored 10 unanswered runs to take their own lead.
Jacie Arrington gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the second as she led off the inning with a home run.
Chandler Mevis,
Carlie Monsour,
Emily Bodenheimer, and
Lauren McElhaney then had consecutive singles that scored three more, to give UWG the early lead.
Montevallo responded in a big way, rattling off eight runs on five hits and an error to take an 8-4 lead after two. The Falcons added two more in the third to make it 10-4.
The Wolves got one more run in the fourth as Monsour scored on a wild pitch. Arrington drove in UWG's final run as she singled home
Kristyn Nix in the seventh.
Arrington led the way offensively with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Her second inning home run was the seventh of the season.
Lauren McElhaney also picked up an RBI in the loss.
The Wolves and Falcons are back in action tomorrow in a doubleheader that has been moved up to a 1 p.m. EST start.
