MONTEVALLO, Ala. – On the final day of the 2022 softball season, the West Georgia Wolves softball team split a Saturday doubleheader at Montevallo in Gulf South Conference play.
West Georgia (15-31, 8-21 GSC) used a seven-run fourth to jump on top in game one of the day, and then fought off a late comeback from Montevallo (25-21, 15-12 GSC) to win 9-7. In game two, a four-run second and a three-run sixth was enough to lift the home team over UWG, as the Wolves scored three runs on three solo shots in the finale.
GAME ONE
The Wolves scored first to open the first leg of the doubleheader as
Kristyn Nix led off with a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt, and scored on a
Jacie Arrington RBI single.
Montevallo then took the lead with a two spot in their half of the first and then added the lead with a single run in the third before UWG made their move in the fourth.
Maddie Gorsuch led off the fourth with a walk, and then back-to-back hits from
Chandler Mevis and
Carlie Monsour scored her to make it a one-run game. With the bases loaded,
Lauren McElhaney grounded into a fielder's choice, but picked up an RBI as Mevis slid in. Nix drew a walk with the bases loaded to give UWG the lead and then
Hannah Scarbrough did damage with a grand slam, making it an 8-3, Wolves lead.
After two Montevallo runs in the fourth, Nix added another run for the Wolves on an RBI single.
Kaley Dowdy started the game for the Wolves, and gave way to
Emma Worley in the fourth. Worley earned the win and
Macy Ann McKnight pitched 1.2 perfect innings to earn a save.
Nix and MEvis each had two hits in the game, with Scarbrough leading the way with four RBIs.
GAME TWO
Montevallo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two, scoring all four in the second inning off of McKnight.
But West Georgia got back into the game on a third inning solo shot from Nix and another in the fourth off the bat of
Maddie Gorsuch.
The Falcons added an insurance run in the fifth, but the big blow was a three-run home run in the sixth inning that put Monteavallo up 8-2.
A storybook finish to
Hannah Scarbrough's career ensued in the seventh as the super senior slugged a home run in her final at bat, accounting for the 8-3 final score.
Nix and Gorsuch each had two hits in the series finale, accounting for four of the Wolves' six hits in the contest.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Scarbrough's grand slam in game one was the first grand slam of her career and the ninth home run of the season, tying her for the team lead. She finishes her career with 14 home runs.
- Nix's home run gives her four on the season and she ended the year with the team lead in extra-base hits with 14. The Zebulon native ended her career with the fifth-best career batting average in school history at .360.
- Gorsuch's home run gives her six for her career.
