Comeback Falls Short against Pacers

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG volleyball program completed their weekend at the Gulf South Conference / Peach Belt Conference Crossover on Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum, falling just short of the USC-AIken Pacers in a five-set barnburner.

Players veteran and rookie had an impact on the match for the Wolves, as freshman Sanai Young had six blocks and senior Emilee Harris had 12 kills, fueling the come-from-behind effort.

USC-Aiken came out swinging in this one, delivering on 31 kills in the first two sets of the match while hitting better than .250 in each set. On the Wolves' side of the coin, had 17 kills and 11 errors in the first two sets, including nine in an opening set that went to the Pacers by a score of 25-18.

The second set was a back-and-forth battle for the duration of the frame, as neither team could get a foothold on a lead. The set was tied at 20-20 when the Pacers went on a 5-0 run, closing out the set and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

West Georgia was not done, however, as the young Wolves came firing back in the third set, building a 7-3 lead in the first 10 points of the game. USC-Aiken had eyes on a sweep, roaring back to within one at 8-7. At that point, the Wolves went on an 11-4 run, building a commanding 19-11 lead. UWG finished the set off with a kill from Zoë LaBreche at 25-16.

The fourth was a similar story, as the Wolves built another 7-3 lead but never looked back this time, as four points was as close as the Pacers would get for the remainder of the set. A Kelli Kaiser ace closed the deal as the Wolves won the set 25-15, forcing a fifth set and deciding set.

In the fifth, USC-Aiken took an early 8-4 lead, then held off a furious charge from the Wolves to hold on to a 15-12 victory.

The Wolves fall to 6-5 on the season, heading into Gulf South Conference play on the road on Tuesday at Auburn Montgomery.
