CARROLLTON, Ga. - Match #2 of the 2022 Gulf South Conference part of the schedule did not go the way of the wolf on Friday evening at The Coliseum as UWG volleyball lost in four sets to 11th-ranked West Florida in the second of three matches this week.
Zoë LaBreche led the way on the evening for the Wolves with 13 kills, but the match was a picture of opposites for the Wolves between the first two sets and the final two.
As a team, the Wolves had 15 kills and 14 attack errors in the first two sets, including just five kills in the opening frame. West Florida countered with 15 kills and just three errors in the first set, hitting .500 en route to a 25-13 victory. West Georgia picked things up on the defensive in the second set, limiting the Argos to a .152 hitting percentage.
The Wolves led for much of the second set, building a 12-7 lead early in the frame. West Florida started to chip away at the lead, catching the Wolves at 18-18 before going on a 7-2 run to close out the set at 25-20 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the UWG offense came to life, committing just three attack errors in the game. West Florida hit .358 as well and the Argos held a 21-19 lead late in the set. After a service error made it 21-20,
Emilee Harris served the Wolves to five consecutive points to take a 25-20 victory. Harris had two aces in those five points and
Sanai Young added two kills to push UWG over the top.
The final set was close for much of the way, but the Argos had 19 kills in the game, pulling away for a 25-21 victory.
The Wolves fall to 6-7 on the year and 0-2 in GSC play while the Argos move to 10-3 and 2-0 against league competition. West Georgia will look to get back into the win column on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at The Coliseum against the Valdosta State Blazers.
