Wolves Sweep Bucs in Friday Tilt

CARROLLTON, Ga. - A sweep was on the menu at The Coliseum on Friday evening as the UWG volleyball program won their ninth match of the season in dominant fashion, 3-0 over the Christian Brothers Buccaneers in Gulf South Conference play.

The Wolves moved to 9-7 on the season with the victory and 2-2 against GSC opponents. West Georgia has won nine of their last 10 sets as well, beating Valdosta State 3-1 last Saturday and Clark Atlanta 3-0 on Tuesday. Zoë LaBreche led the way in the game with nine kills on the offensive side. Defensively, the Wolves put up 13 blocks in the game, led by Isabella Steffel with seven.

In the opening set, UWG came out firing on all cylinders, putting the Bucs on their heels early with an 8-1 lead. The Wolves kept their foot on the gas for the entirety of the set, taking a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 victory.

I was very pleased with our effort and focus in this match. We faced a lot of long, tough rallies at times in the match and were able to capitalize. This group is growing every day. - Head Coach Kara Hellmann

The second set was more of a battle than the first set, as CBU came out strong early while taking a 12-9 lead. The Bucs extended the lead to 15-11 before the Wolves mounted a comeback. Six straight points later, UWG was back in the lead at 17-15. That momentum propelled the Wolves forward as Isabela Segoviano delivered an ace on set point to give UWG a 2-0 lead.

West Georgia was relentless in the final set, leaping out to a 16-4 lead before coasting to a 25-11 victory. Sydney Blackmon matched Segoviano from the second set on match point, delivering on the 10th ace of the night for the Wolves to win 25-11.

The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum with Senior Day 2022. Head coach Kara Hellmann will honor seniors Emilee Harris, Sydney Blackmon, and Caitlin Frazee before the game.
