CARROLLTON, Ga. – The West Georgia Wolves Volleyball team turned in a four-set victory on Friday morning, defeating Georgia College 4-1 in the opening game of the GSC/PBC Crossover at The Coliseum.
West Georgia (6-3) fell behind in the opening set before winning three straight sets to close out the Bobcats and start the weekend with a victory while hitting .241 in the contest.
The Bobcats (3-5) controlled the first set, scoring the first three points, and eventually building an eight-point lead at the 18-10 point of the set. But the Wolves responded to cut the deficit to four at 22-18, forcing a Georgia College timeout. Out of the timeout, UWG fought back to cut it to two before GCSU closed it out at 25-22 to take the early lead.
The response from West Georgia was exactly what head coach
Kara Hellmann wanted to see after her young squad fell behind early in the match.
"A slow start, but really pleased to see us be able to take the momentum back after the first set," said Hellmann.
In the second, West Georgia built the early lead until Georgia College eventually tied it up at 10-10 and took their first lead at 13-12 and eventually led 15-12. From that point, the Wolves got four straight points with
Kelli Kaiser on serve and turned that into a one-point lead. UWG would never give up the lead, winning 25-20.
West Georgia then took a lead in the match with a 25-20 win in the third. The Wolves hit .280 in the set, led the majority of the match, and closed it out on 9-4 run. The Wolves put an exclamation point on the win with a wire-to-wire victory in what became the final set. UWG never trailed and led by as many six on their way to the 25-19 victory.
"We are still finding our confidence and matches like this are good growth moments for this program," added Hellmann.
Three Wolves had double-digit kills including a game-high 14 from freshman
Sarah Pipping.
Emilee Harris and
Isabella Steffel each had 10 in the game.
Sanai Young chipped in with eight kills and had three blocks.
Autumn Mayes had 42 assists and led with 15 digs.
West Georgia is back in action against Augusta at 4 p.m. this afternoon from The Coliseum.
