CARROLLTON, Ga. - Three second half goals erased a deficit on Sunday afternoon, as the UWG soccer team defeated Christian Brothers 3-1 on Sunday for a three-game win streak.
The Wolves and the Bucs opened up the day with a scoreless first half that consisted of a continuous back-and-forth battle between both teams.
The second half opened up with an unassisted goal by Christian Brothers' Flavia Iorio in the 57th minute, giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
"Honestly, when they scored, some heads dropped but there were immediate words of encouragement and re-focus from our captains," said head coach Jacob Crawford, "Then, just after the kickoff we missed a free volley within the six-yard box and that's when I knew they wanted it. Relentless pressure after that moment."
The pressure indeed was relentless as the Wolves scored all three goals in the final 20 minutes of play.
The first came from junior Angie Garces in the 71st minute of the match, as she scored on a rebound after Jade Butcher's attempt deflected off the post. Three minutes later, Judith Leon-Juarez took a short corner into the box and sent a rocket into the back of the net, and that proved to be the game winner.
Avery Moon had the final goal of the competition, heading in a cross from Abby McGlamery, in the 83rd minute.
All three goal scorers came off the bench for the Wolves, providing a much needed spark when things didn't go their way early in the period.
"Angie, Avery, JJ (Juarez), and Ashley each provided amazing performances off the bench today," Crawford said. "We spoke about those four as a staff afterwards. Angie deserved the goal today as she was a creative spark in the midfield during the second half."
The win was the the third straight and marked the first time since late October of 2021 in which the Wolves won both games of a weekend. It's also the first time the Wolves have gotten six points from the Union-CBU weekend of the schedule since 2018.
West Georgia is now midway through the Gulf South Conference slate, sitting in the top four in the league table.
"We have things we want to accomplish as a team so we are not where we'd like to be just yet, but winning three of four in two home weekends is what we expect," concluded Crawford. "We've got to continue pushing in order to get where we see ourselves come November."
The Wolves are back on the road this Friday, October 6th against Mississippi College at 2 p.m.
